Connection frustrations...

I've searched for an answer but haven't found one, so maybe one of you true technophiles can help me along.

I have an HDMI cable going from my Samsung LCD (HDMI In) to my Onkyo TX-SR705 (HDMI Out). There is also a DVD player and a PS3 connected to the receiver's HDMI In's. No cable/satellite box. The problem is I don't get any sound from the speakers connected to the receiver when i try to watch TV. It seems like there would be an HDMI Out on the TV so that I could get sound out of it thru the receiver; but there are just two HDMI In's on the TV. And the TV's internal sound is turned off. What am I missing? The PS3 and TV share the receiver's GAME/TV input selector and I have to manually change the digital input setting to Optical 1 just to hear the TV once the PS3 is turned off. This seems like too much of a hassle, so I'm pretty sure I haven't done something properly. Can somebody please help me out? Thanx.

It soesn't sound like you've got the TV connected o the receiver's audio inputs.

HDMI is not the magic do-all bullet everyone wants to believe it is. It has it's uses and limitations.

What output options does your TV have? some have a toslink connector which may provide some dsort of sound, depending on the TV and it's implementation , but virtually ALL TV's 've seen have a pair of red/white analog audio outputs which are pretty much guaranteed to work.

Why are you using digital optical for the PS3 when you can get the audio via HDMI? Or you could use and reasign the VCR/DVR or CBL/SAT settings for the TV.

Two input devices cannot share one input on a receiver. The only way I can see things working the way you describe is if you have an optical connection from the TV to optical 1 on the receiver. The PS3 is sending both audio and video to the receiver over HDMI so you get sound from PS3 that way. Then when you want to hear the sound from the TV, you have to assign the input to optical 1 rather than HDMI.

The solution to the problem is simply to NOT 'share' one input. Since you have no cable box, you can consider the TV itself as a source - just like the dvd player and PS3. The labels on the input selectors are just for convenience and you can plug anything into them. Use Cable/Sat for the TV and assign its digital input to optical 1.
