Blu-ray outsells HD-DVD by 2-1 but Q4 improves for HD-DVD

ARTICLE

Paramount Home Video said that "Transformers" had the biggest debut of any high-definition titles, selling over 100,000 HD-DVDs on Oct 16, its first day of release.

Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research, also said the 18-month period of exclusivity for HD-DVDs by Paramount and DreamWorks should strengthen HD-DVD's hand this quarter.

"This definitely smooths out the edge that Blu-ray had in exclusive titles and it very much strengthens HD-DVD's hand in the fourth quarter," he said, but still expects Blu-ray will lead for the year overall.

I still think HD will win in the end...but I'm one of the "won't buy until one wins" or "they become dirt cheap" :D

I own Blu-ray because of PS3, but I don't care if Blu-ray loses and HD DVD wins. I have 9 Blu-rays but I only buy the must have titles.

am I the only person who thinks this competition between BD and HD is good for us consumers?

they're trying to kill each other in discounts ... I'd say that's a good thing.

can you imagine if there was only one format, they'd be pricing that ^&*) out of this world.

I disagree. If there were one format, everyone would be using the same manufacturing processes and the prices would come down more quickly. Everyone would also be pushing to eliminate DVD over a reasonable period of time so they could have a solidified single line. This is not healthy competition.

Plus wal-mart would eventually start stocking inexpensive chineese made players which would also fuel pricing competition, so I too think one format would be best for everyone.

It was good at first, but having two formats now is keeping us from moving to the next level.

All the R&D would go into one technology, not two, and companies would be able to adequately ramp up production and reduce cost at the same time. Companies would still be competing for a share of the market. One format would be better.

if for example sony's BD is the only format ... do you really think they'd lower the price for us?

they'd probably string us along with high prices for a few years.

Not if DVD continued to outsell it by a margin of about 10 to 1... I've already noticed that stores are selling many DVD versions of movies now that have high def versions out for as little as $4-$6...

It's not "Sony's BD"

There are 18 patent holders in Blu-ray Disc technology.

  • CyberLink Corporation
  • Dell Inc.
  • Hewlett-Packard Company
  • Hitachi Ltd.
  • Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.
  • LG Electronics Inc.
  • Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic)
  • Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
  • Pioneer Corporation
  • Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
  • Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.
  • Sharp Corporation
  • Sonic Solutions
  • Sony Corporation
  • TDK Corporation
  • Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC)
  • Warner Home Video Inc.

The article is wrong about one thing though, it's not going to get any better in Q4 for HD DVD. They have 3 big day and date exclusives, Blu-ray has twice that and a substantially larger 2007 box office share when looking at the Top 100 movies.

Big day and dates

HD DVD
  1. Transformers
  2. Shrek 3
  3. The Bourne Ultimatum
  4. Knocked Up
  5. Evan Almighty

Blu-ray
  1. Spider-man 3
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End
  3. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
  4. The Simpson Movie
  5. Meet the Robinsons
  6. Superbad
  7. Hairspray (on HD DVD sometime in 2008)
  8. Rush Hour 3 (on HD DVD sometime in 2008)
  9. Die Hard 4
  10. Ratatouille

Plus neutral day and dates do better on Blu-ray regardless of genre, selling anywhere from 1.7:1 to 2.4:1 better than the HD DVD.

Neutral releases in Q4 include Ocean's 13 and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

As a personal opinion I think the hottest catalogue title of Q4 will be on Blu-ray also - Independence Day on Decemeber 4th.

I disagree (well to a point)
I knew that there was going to be new posts on this, BD outselling HD DVD...
And I had stated, they (BD) are are claiming better sales, which is BS.

Yeah, they have sold more, when they are taking a major loss, when HD DVD has not had to take as much of a loss.

BD knew that Transformers was going to sell well, so to make their numbers look good, they have had the massive sales of BOGO, and many sales of 9.99 for each movie.
Yet their overall prices are still more than HD DVD.

BD average sale per disc
Stats
Average Retail Price $35.33
Average US Box Office $61.6M

HD DVD
Stats
Average Retail Price $34.32
Average US Box Office $66.3M

Yet from the BD fanboys, I keep hearing that BDs are always cheaper than HD DVDs.

I will say, since BD wanted to make their sold numbers look so good, by cutting the price when convienant for them.
Has only helped me, as usually I will buy the HD DVD first.
But when I can get a movie for 9.99 I will buy it. (last month I bought about 20 extra BDs).

HD DVD will in the longer run, sell more.
Why??
Because the players are not WAY OVER INFLATED, and out of reach for average joe.

Currently I have 2 HD DVDs and 1 BD player.
I would love to get another BD player, when the prices get to a remotely reasonable cost. (170-190).
Which just is not going to happen anytime soon. (specially with X-Mas around the corner)
Oh, they will go on sale, from 499.99 down to 429.99 but that is still outrageous for a player.
(granted the one BD player I have was WAY overpriced when I bought it, at almost 600.00)
And I will say, although it plays very nice. It is only about 5% better looking for DVDs, than my el-cheapo HD DVD player.
(that is comparing the BD-P1200 against a cheap HD-A2 and it is only about 2% better for DVDs than my HD-XA1)

EDIT;
As a personal opinion I think the hottest catalogue title of Q4 will be on Blu-ray also - Independence Day on Decemeber 4th.
I am guessing you are a huge fan of Blu-Ray.
Because I see it always in your posts.
Sorry to say, but that is just a little meak in my book.
One-way thinking.

Anyhow, yeah it is nice to see your opinion on the LOL, Independence Day. (I put that movie in the good but not classic, same as say Twister)

I am waiting for real movies like; (true classics)
The Godfather (Paramount)
The Godfather: Part II
Schindler's List (Universal)
Star Wars (the original)
The Lord of the Rings (all of them)
Saving Private Ryan (Paramount)
Forrest Gump (Paramount)
Braveheart
Blade Runner 5 disc set.... (yeah, I've got it pre-ordered on HD DVD):D:D (TRUE CLASSIC)
Back to the Future (although not a huge classic, I would love to see the trilogy out on HD now)
And some old classics like
Harvey (Universal)
Miracle on 34th Street
It's a Wonderful Life (Paramount)
Some Like It Hot (MGM)

In other words, movies that I watch at least twice a yera EVERY year.
I laugh at movies like Hot Fuzz, being considered an instant classic (that is just a joke)....
(although it was an ~ok movie, it by no means belongs on a list of all time best movies ever....)

But it is nice to know, we all have opinions.:p

As well the original Disney movies (that are being held, until it is convienant for Blu-Ray to get more sales)
I wish they would stop putting crap movies out, and holding back the good movies.
I've only bought a BD player mainly because of Disney, if they were not exclusive (when they want), I probably would not have bought a BD player....
Or I would have waited until the price of a player is at 150ish.

But since I am a movie fan, I could not wait.
I am really wanting Cars BD. (which IMO, is one of the best movies they will have released)

HD-DVD is taking a loss on their PLAYERS, the main reason why they cost less...which offsets the fact that they are making money on the movies... This was mentioned in the article.

The $9.99 sale was at ONE retailer.

Star Wars - will not be on either anytime soon from the mouth of the man himself.

Blade Runner - comes out on both.

Lord of the Rings - comes out on both.

I agree on ID4. That will probably sell well, but I probably won't pick it up unless it gets a really good review...fun, but not a classic.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, I've been waiting for one of the two formats to at least become dominant. It looks like I could be waiting a while yet! I think I'll make a move one way or the other by Christmas though.

LOL, yeah there won't be a winner by X-mas (well, not X-mas of this year:p)
There should be at minimum another year of content on both formats, and likely 2 more years.

Go over to Best Buy and pick up the Xbox HD DVD add on, for 179.
and get almost 500.00 in free movies....
(I grabbed 2 sets, 2 Heroes, Planet Earth, 2 Ultimate Matrix, Smallville Season 6 (and will send in for the 10 free 5/5)
Great deal. (but it was a mistake, so capitilize today as it is the last day)
