IR Control questions

my dvd player is in my component cabinet. the door to the cabinet is glass, but has some wood framing that blocks my DVD player's IR receiver. same is true for my CD player. without getting into a new remote and/or RF devices, is there some sort of IR solution that i can use to run an IR sensor from ym DVD and CD players to an external sensor that my remote can control without being blocked by the cabinet door.

i realize i could buy a RF/IR remote and the appropriate RF receiver box, but that seems like overkill since my yamaha's universal remote does most of what i need and my only issue is controlling these 2 components during movies.

i can't keep the component cabinet door open b/c it would block one of my speakers.

any suggestions appreciated. is there something similar to the new RF receiver boxes that only does IR, for example?

Yes, they do make inexpensive IR repeaters. I believe you can get one at Radio Shack.

Heck, now days you can probably pick up a used Pronto Pro TSU6000 with the extender for less than $200 on Ebay. I picked mine up new with the extender for just over $300 more than 1 1/2 years ago. The extender comes with three dual IR emitter cables. That allows control of 6 devices from anywhere in you house since it's RF.

Probably get a real good deal on a TSU3000.

I wonder if that extender would work well with a yamaha rx-v2500 remote...
I'm going to order one since I managed to program my yamaha remote to control everything before I had my av stuff put in a nearby closet.

I was in the same dillemma you were in... Guess what... there is NOOO universal remote better then the MFG remote to have access to all the various functions and control over your HT reciever... NADA that comes close.. and you know whats the biggest bugger... you have to spend upwards of $300 dollars till you convince yourself you got a good one...

Well... my rx-2500 yamaha remote is programmable and works like the most perfect wonderfull charm ... I programmed all my components... didn't spend more then $45.00 and all the stuff is in the closet of my master bedroom.. and my flat panel lcd is mounted up all nice and neat on its own...

That RF extender is a real wonder... I really can't believe how great this has all worked out... I was about to buy a harmony 890... the idea of having to spend 300-400 for a remote that wouldn't even match the instrinsic detailed control of my reciever remote gave me nausea... so yeah.. its a hell of a deal.. works great... buy it.

I take it you have little experience with a REAL universal remote. :D

I spent $125 on a Home Theater Master MX-350 and it controls every single function of every single device I own - including the dimmer for my fireplace floodlight.

The remote that comes with a component, even if it claims to be a learning remote, is very limited in memory, has little or no support for all but the most trivial macros, rarely has backlighting, can't control one device when in another device mode, cannot lock volume/channel up/channel down/transport functions to a given mode, etc....

But...hey, glad you like the receiver remote and you got it working satisfactorily for your needs.

I don't have experience with universals. I still wouldn't think it would be anything other then a painstaking task to fully control an advanced reciever an excess of controls with a remote that wasn't made for it.

OFcourse, and I fully agree, you can program anything. As far as components are concerned I am very simple... but what does the yamaha remote offer you I just doubt anything will come close. For example... for every one of your sources, you have a button, automatically switches to it, can control 3 zones, can program hundreds of macros, its backlit, has a small lcd for basic confirmations and component selection, No matter what processor /decoder I want to put my reciever in, I can, for music, movies or anything else, I can.

It all comes at a cost though, if I ever get into home automation or lighting I will have no choice, but even then would be reluctant due to the practicality. Paying $100 for a remote that handles lighting is pretty reasonable and unheard of, I must say, I thought to control zwave things it would be allot more expensive. For now I only toil with remote control ceilling fans for the time being.

At the present time I am in an apartment, my components are my comp, cd changer, dvd, dvr, stb, lcd. Someday will setup a 2nd zone for my BR... all the control I want from the components are VERY simple (not many buttons atall), ANY control can handle that I will agree. But I must doubt that when I move from here into a house and have 3 zones etc etc... I still wouldn't
expect the instrinsic control of the reciever from a universal.

Now, as far as " support for all but the most trivial macros, rarely has backlighting, can't control one device when in another device mode, cannot lock volume/channel up/channel down/transport functions to a given mode, etc...." from what you noticed I'm just a simpler user, I know the yamaha can handle hundreds of macros and I do everything from it, but I never even bothered with macros.

I responded in hopes that someone else doesn't go through the headache of indecision and understand everyone has different needs.

ciao
