Speaker damaged/clipping? Or DVD problem?

And both you guys have the Center Speaker set to "Small" or "Large"?
All speakers are usually set to small, but I also did try setting each on on large to see if there are any differences - same problem whether it's on small or large, same problem whether it's LFE or LFE+MAIN.

Robbit, maybe we can make a listing of scenes in movies that we hear the distortion and compare our notes?

Here are some of the more popular DVDs and BDs that I have. I'll have to check to see which ones have the problem:

DVDs:
- LotR - All 3 extended versions, and all 3 orginal DVD releases.
- F&F: Toyko Drift
- Pearl Harbour: SE
- Batman Begins
- Superman Returns
- Heros: Season 1 (I know I get lot's of problems with this one)
- 24: Seasons 3,4,5.
- Battlestar Galactica: Seasons 1, 2.0, 2.5.
- X-Men 3: Final Stand
- Flight of the Phoenix
- War of the Worlds (Speilburg)

Bluray Disc:
- Planet Earth
- TMNT
- 300 (known problems)
- Crash
- Letters from Iwo Jima
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Four Brothers

Let me know if you have any of these and I'll check to see if I hear anything, or if you have any other movies you know of that has the same problem.

Does this crackling occur in "Direct" mode on your audio system?

I got Heroes DVD from Netflix, so I will also let you guys know if I hear the dialogue problem.

It does make more sense that the DVDs are the problem & not the speakers.

And not all DVDs/BDs/HD DVDs of the same title are the same either.

I sold the NHT SuperZero system to my brother, but I will check some of my movies on this system too.

Acu,

Thanks for checking. I believe that the most problems are with Hiro Nakamura's voice, since he gets so excited and raises his voice all the time.

Once I get home, I'll find a scene and post the episode number and time stamp.

Sure, like I stated earlier:

1. Batman Begins (regular DVD): The only place I noticed it was at the end when the cop is talking with Batman on the roof. He says something like, "We buy armor but they buy armor piercing rounds". During this dialog I catch bits and pieces of crackle.

2. Letters from Iwo Jima (HD-DVD): The one place I remember for sure was when the lieutenant was briefing his soldiers. He says something like, "Do you know why we will win" and then a soldier stands up and answers. After this, the lieutenant starts talking more excitedly to inspire his troops. During this heightened dialog, there is "cracklage" :)

3. Transformers (regular DVD): Entire movie seemed fine until the Secretary of Defense gives his little monologue at the end. Right around the time they show Shia and Megan laying on the Camaro, the dialog that the Secretary is giving starts to crackle.

4. Gears of War (Xbox 360 Game): Only place I noticed this was when playing multiplayer on the Train Station level. When the train goes by, there is slight crackling that sounds much like the crackle that occurs during dialog sequences in movies.

These are the only recollections I have at the moment. I still have yet to retest my system since switching over from 7.1 simulation (work has been crazy). I'll keep checking back though!

Bloodstriker...

Not to depress you or anything, but I have all of the extended editions of Lord of the Rings and have never noticed any crackling. Of course, now that you've pointed it out, I'll be sitting there for hours with a stethoscope just making sure I don't hear any

That is why I think it may be a defect in the pressing. It all leads back to the DVD itself.
You make me sad.

Robbit, I don't know if LotR has any crackling. I'm just listing it as a DVD that I have that I can check.

Of the ones that I have with known issues, is there anything you have as well?

I find it exceedingly difficult to believe that distortion would be recorded into a multimillion dollar movie soundtrack. Especially in the vocals.
It's more likely that peaks in the soundtrack are exceeding safe levels in the recording, which are then passed on to the preamp, which then promptly vomits crackling sounds into the center channel amplifier instead of clean signals.

Test the movie on your computer using the software DVD player.

Well, I was over at my brother's house after work. He has the NHT SuperZero + SW2P system. He also has a copy of Heroes SD DVD. Guess what? I heard minor crackles in the dialogue! It happened several times throughout the 1 hr episode. I tried all five SuperZero speakers in the Center Channel. Same results. But the crackles were very mild. And if I had not paid close attention, I might not have noticed at all.

So I tried it out on my $1,000 CLR3000. SAME RESULT!!!
Very mild, but I heard some static sound with my ears close to the speakers. I did not hear this crackle on my "300" BD even with my ears pressed against the CLR3000, but I heard it on the DVD of Heroes.

Good grief; yall are still talking about this?
Yeah, I think we are aiming for Page 20 to be the last chapter.:D

Do you have Heroes on DVD? I believe I heard crackles on this series.

The plot is really truly silly, but it is Sci-Fi.:)

I have never heard crackles on any HD DVD or Blu-ray movies. I might rent Heroes on HD DVD and see.

Haha this topic has been going on for a looong time.

I've heard crackles on BD, but I'm connected via optical so no HD audio for me.

One thing off topic that I've been noticing is that on certain movies, when a voice is recorded into the scene independantly, I hear this super high pitched sound.

Like in action sequences, when it's a stunt double and the actor dubs the voice in afterwards, I can hear this "eeeeee" sound.

That can't be a system problem for sure, but kind of interesting. I'll see if I can find a scene with that.
