Hey all,

Not trying to start anything (Monster product :D) but I am wondering if this is a worthwhile purchase or not. I can get this for half-price ($199CDN).

Info Link: Monster Power HTS 1600 PowerCenter (I am not buying it from there)

I am looking for power protection for my new HT systems since my power is subject to spikes. I also live in an area that gets thunderstorms most everyday during the season.

It does look cool, but for $199 it has to do more for me than that.

What do you think?

Thanks for your input
Michael

Seems pricey for what you get, but it might be because I'm not familiar with prices in Canada. I think that you can get more for less. I have a Belkin PureAV PF31D that has worked just fine for me, and it costs about $135USD.

Yeah, things tend to be a bit pricer up here in Canada. I have until the end of the day today so I am looking around to see what is out there for the same or less. Lots available in the states but the extra shipping and possible duty will kill any deal I find.

Thanks for you inputMichael

Ahhh, yes. I just checked Amazon.ca (I bought mine from Amazon.com), and they don't have any Belkin products...at least my search didn't show any.

One thing that I'd like to mention is to be sure that it has enough outlets for you. I had a Panamax power strip that worked great, but I got the Belkin because the Panamax only had eight outlets and I ran out when I got a new amp.

You might want to also consider getting a power strip unless you're set on getting a console. I got a console because I was looking for something new, but it takes up room in the entertainment center. The voltage and current readings were cool for about 20 seconds, but I don't really look at them anymore. Also...something that I didn't consider...is that it might be a hassle to plug things into the back of the console once it's inside of your stack of gear. If I were to do it all over again, I would have saved some coin and gotten another strip (I've seen a Belkin strip that probably protects as well as my console that goes for $32US on sale).

Good points Adam. I knew it would go in my AV rack but I did not think about it beyond there. Might be a bit of a pain to route all those power cords. I will have to look at the stand when I get home after work.

And it does only have 8 outlets. I know that is enough right now, but you never know what I might buy tomorrow :D

I still have a few hours of the sale to do some more research and check out some strips as well.

Thanks again
Michael

It does depend on what kind of HT system you have and what kind of source you are using. If you have one of the older CRT rear projestion TV's or CRT Tv's then this would be a good buy and using an HTiB. If you are using an HD TV (DLP, LCD or Plasma) with and HD source and have a real HT system (Speakers, receiver, sub) and depending on how much you spent on it then I would go with at least the Monster MP HT Reference PowerCenter (HTS 3600) or if you spent a lot of money and have mid to high end speakers, receiver, sub and TV then i would go with the Monster Power Center (MP HTS5100 MKII) which cost me $800 from $1000. Dont forget that not only is it a higher stage which has more separation from the audio to video and so fourth but it also does provide a cleaner picture to your TV and trust me it does I can see a big difference when I got everything hooked up.

Do a search on Monster in this forum. You might not like what you find but you will get the general consensus.

Hey Alex2507,

I have been on here long enough to know what the general thoughts are on Monster. Just thought I might be able to pick up a product at a decent price rather than an inflated one.

I did not end up buying one in the end

Thanks for you input

I bought a 3500 on eBay for $165 and I'm okay with it. $200 seems a bit steep for a 1600 is all.

On a side note I went to high school in Calgary. Nice place.

Once I started looking around a bit I did see thar $199CDN was a bit steep, even though it was on sale from $399CDN.

I have browsed around a bit on e-bay and bought a couple of small and cheap electronic items, but am still trying to get over a few of the horror stories I have heard about e-bay purchases. I think I need to get over it as it seems like a lot of people get a lot of great deals there.

Thanks
Michael

$199 US wouldn't be bad for it, and the dollar and Canadian dollar are matched, no? I'm a big APC fan - they seem to have more bang for buck...

Thanks for the input Clint. I did go to check them out on the one-day sale but they were out of stock so I got a rain-check. Gives me a month to decide on the purchase or not. I think I will at least go pick it up and check it out for myself.

The Canadian $ is actually sitting at 1.02US$ as of today. A lot of places are still doing catch-up from buys while are dollar was still lower so prices are a little slow o normalize.

Have been looking into APC stuff as well and it does look like it carries a bit more bang for the buck. Still lloking into options but as I said I think I might pick up the 1600 to take a look. Will have 30-days to return if I change my mind.

Thanks again
Michael
