Alright, I have read that surrounds should be placed above and slightly be hind the listening position, but what is above? 6 inches 2 feet? and is there an ideal height?

insight appreciated

i agree with avaserfi, for movies 1-2 feet above ear level is good

Thanks for the definitive answer:)
one other question: the rear surrounds, should they be at the same height as the surrounds or higher?

Editing your post, sneaky one ;). Same height works with rear surrounds, no worries about that. Of course if that is not feasible lower or higher can work too, but I would try to keep everything even.

agreed as well. same height is best, but MY rear surrounds I think are a bit lower by a few inches (not more than 6")

we're talking tweeter height here.

sorry about the spacing of these questions but I never seem to think about them all at the same time.
If the distance from my ideal listening position to the rear wall is about 8.5 feet would that change the height at which the rear surrounds should be placed?
I am still in the process of researching and actually extending the room to its final length. When finished it will be 20ft long.
The room itself is extremely awkward.
the width is 14ft 2.5 in
the length as stated above
the height even more difficult
the right wall is 7ft 2in
the left wall 9ft 2.5 in
oh and the walls & floor are concrete
I do plan on putting in stud walls and installing a wood floor directly on the concrete

No change in speaker height at all actually, when you are setting up your receiver with the SPL meter it might require a little boosting to level match the rear surrounds, but that isn't a big deal. Also, you will want to ensure proper distances input in the receiver as well, but again that just requires a tape measure.

Just keep everything at the same height and you will be golden :).

Also, with a room like that you should think strongly about room treatments and possibly laying carpet on the floor with thick padding, if possible.

Room treatments are high on the list. The carpet may be a problem I live in the tropics, the South Pacific to be exact, and carpet does not generally work because of the high humidity. But I will give it some thought.

It is good to know that the speaker height doesn't need to be changed.

Thanks again
