Disintegrating remote

OK your gonna think I am nuts. But its all true. I have a Sherwood RNC-500 universal remote (MX500 repackaged) and the non slip coating on the outside has turned to slimy mush. I can run my nail through it and remove a material the consistency of tar. Anyone have a clue as to cause of my Videodrome experience?

Exposure to ozone or heat? Do you leave it sitting on top of a component? I have seen plastic "melt" and usually it is either real cheap plastic (another quality Chinese product?) or some chemical is getting to it.

I had a similar coating on a remote with the Cambridge Audio cd player I used to have. When it started rubbing off I gently sanded the remaining stuff and repainted it.

My pronto pro also has this type of coating on it which worries me!
