Hello!
I am new to this forum and hoping someone can help me with my denon receiver. Have to admit, I paid Best Buy to hook this up for me as I am not all that knowledgeable. My immediate concern is that I am getting no sound when I have my receiver on TV. I am getting picture and am getting surround sound on tuner and sound and picture on DVD. Denon does not write their owners manual for the novice by any means and all I got from their tech support is to call Best Buy back out (at another $150.00) can someone please help? In addition to checking back on this forum, my e-mail address is spalmere@yahoo.com Thanks!

First and foremost, since BB did not hook up the system correctly the first time, they should come out for free. Go back to the place where you bought the system and make a stink about it.

It seems your audio input assignment may be incorrect for the TV source. First you will have to identify which audio input the TV audio is connected. You did not mention if you have a Satellite or Cable box and we cannot say if the audio is coming over HDMI or digital or analog. This info will be needed to guide you through fixing the problem.

Welcome, hope we can help. It will help considerably if you could provide a complete list of your equipment with make & model. It sounds like they didn't wire TV sound to go through the receiver, but that's just a guess. Is the TV connected through a cable/satellite box, or straight cable from the wall?

Hello! and thanks for both of your speedy replies. I will try to be more concise with my setup. I have a Magnavox cable box which is hooked up via HDMI to my Panasonic 42" flat screen. I also have HDMI running from my oppo DVD player to my receiver as well as HDMI from my TV to reciever. I really think I am the one who scewed this up trying to recify someone getting in there and pushing buttons. I have had this setup for about 1 year and originally it was working fine, so I really can't go back to BB and yell at them. I am sure it was something I did unknowingly. I would just like a working knowledge of my receiver so I can fully utililize it. Hope someone can help

If the cable box is connected directly to the TV via HDMI then that is why there is no sound - the receiver is out of the loop.

You need to either connect the cable box to the receiver via HDMI or connect an optical or coax digital cable from the cable box to the receiver (and configure the cable box to output the audio thru its digital outs and video through HDMI).

For ease of use, I would take MDS' first suggestion. Run HDMI from the cable box to the Denon and assign the HDMI port to the input you choose in the video setup menu. When you select HDMI video, the audio menu should automatically select HDMI audio for that source.

This way, you only have one HDMI cable running to your TV. Both the Oppo and cable box run to the receiver and both audio and video are switched from the receiver. The TV becomes a passive monitor that doesn't need to have it's source input switched.

What they said...

Multiple HDMI "ins" to the Denon, one HDMI "out" to the TV. That way, your receiver takes on sound and video duties for both the dvd player and the cable box. It sounds like you currently have your cable box running straight to the tv - bypassing the receiver - and that's the problem.

Thanks again! But you really need to walk me thru this. I guess I'm not understanding, if this setup that I have was working before with me getting sound and picture on TV why do I need to start moving wires around (which I will do if someone can help) I had it setup where you didn't have to turn on the receiver to get picture and sound and that's how I am viewing TV now. It is only when I turn on receiver, that no sound is coming out. Thanks again!

In this description there doesn't seem to be a connection to the receiver from the cable box or TV which is confusing as to why it worked previously. The only thing going through the receiver is the DVD player.
