$400 - Tower Speakers

Hi guys,

Hopefully I'll have a full blown addiction to audiophile audio quality stuff by the time I reach around 1000 posts or so. ;)

I have a Sansui G-9000 vintage amp that needs some tower speakers to go with it, and my budget is around $400. The room this setup will be in is something I would consider "cozy" (about 15' x 10', and carpeted).

So far I have been impressed with what I've seen over at the AV123 website, and I have my eyes glued to the x-sls Tower's, as seen here:

av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=94.1

(drag into browser)

Being a computer hardware/overclocking enthusiast, I know how important component selection is and I don't want to get anything less than the very best for what I'm going to spend.

What is the best tower setup I can possibly get for under $400? Please don't suggest anything used as this will probably be a Christmas present from my parents to myself.

Thanks,

corbin

As you can see, there are quite a few options and all are very good and different. The speaker package that's best is the one that sounds best to you. Try and get out and audition some of these brands as speakers are the most important component of your system.

PA RTi8 or BA VR2.

Both will be gone very soon. A quick decision must be made.

Wow, I didn't know there would be so many choices.

The main two I'm having trouble deciding between I guess could be summed up by what zumbo said.

PA RTi8 or BA VR2?

...is there any place I could listen to these two side by side?

Polk Audio RTi 8's or Boston Accoustics VR2 speakers.

Polk Audio is phasing out the current RTI series, so you can pick them up at lower prices. Tweeter/Sound Advice sells the RTI line.

The factory renewed Boston VR3 for $179ea or new for a budget busting $250ea. These are discontinued and a heck of a deal.

I wonder what factory renewed truly entails. Still, great deal! I've been hunting for a speaker gift, found some Monitor Audio B2s for $280 new, but $360 for VR3 is pretty sweet! I think I might head to my local CC and listen to the VR2s to be sure. Thanks for the listings.

I've been hearing that the VR2's have been really bright for some people... and with my already bright Sansui G-9000 combined with my adversity towards listening fatigue, I'm pretty sure the Polk RTi8's would be the better choice.

I am going to go to my local Fry's to check things out though...

As a sidenote, I currently have Optimus STS-800 Tower speakers ($200 pair of Radio Shack floor standing speakers) and am using an RCA DVD player as a CD player... will I actually hear a big improvement if I upgrade?

I hope the VRs are still around next week at Onecall, because I think I may get a pair of VR3s or VR2s, great sounding speakers for a super low price. I listed to them for about an hour at a dealer with a decent setup, they sounded fantastic, and they where offering them at a discount that was hard to believe for a dealer. Circuit City may still have the VRs in their stores on close out, get in there and listen before they are gone, DON'T BUY THEM AT CIRCUIT CITY, YOU WILL PAY MUCH MORE!!!

Good luck.:)

The only reason the Sansui would sound bright is if the speakers where the cause of it, not the amplifier (or tonal settings need to be checked). I do not find the Boston VR series to be bright or forward, at least no in comparison to Infinity, BIC, or Klipsch. I have Infinity IL 10s and BIC towers and they are brighter and more sibilent than the Boston VR series IMO.

Those Mirage towers are a steal! I would like to have those in a 2 channel setup.

Looks like the OP is going RTi, but I figure to throw in comments about the BA anyways. I just got back from CC. Took 3 times to ask for someone to help, by which time I was already tinkering with the stuff myself, pulling speakers several feet out from the corner, checking connections, changing receiver, changing out my discs for mine, etc. First guy I asked I've met at the local basketball courts and we are on friendly terms, so Im sure he asked somebody. Maybe too many customers. I listened to selections from 4 cd's. I will say there was a TON of ambient noise around me, and a couple of times even competing with a nearby HTIB cranked to overly muddified distortion. I had no listening chair so I kneeled on the floor for a while. So, seeing what I was dealing with, take all the following with plenty of salt.

Ya, I wonder who is calling these speakers overly bright? Maybe a Bose owner, or some other fellow who is paid to advertise ID gear. PSBs seem to be more unforgiving and forward in the upper registers, and those I found to be of good value. The speakers imaged much better than I anticipated they would. The extension was good, but for my tastes I'd still want a sub eventually to mate with them. Or.... maybe with a good amp the sub would not be needed, hard to say for me....

While not as unforgiving as other speakers, there still was a decent amount of hiss going on. Just overlying ambient hiss. I will give a good deal of fault to the Onkyo receiver and Sony carousel. I will say also say there were probably higher stresses from volumes asked of the receiver so that I could compete with so much ambient noise. The actual trebles were not "ear-piercing" or "ear-bleeding" or what have you. While stereo imaging was good, better than expected, I did not get any magical front/back depth type of imaging. I am guessing the room was about 13x18, towers on the long wall, 14 subs and 20 receivers on the opposite wall, innumerable bookshelves etc on other walls, you get the picture. I am most curiuos to hear this in a better room with a good cd player and good integrated.

Also, I "swear" (*scratching head*) that there was something funny going on in the upper x-over. The continuity of upper-midrange lines were not, um, not "convincing" with some slight variations in timbre and forwardness. That being said, there were a couple of "blooming" frequency spots which I guess I must attribute to room. Im going to check out the BA specs right now just out of curiuosity if its a 1st, 2nd, 3rd order etc. I have to say that almost all of music listening in my life has been done on 2-ways. I've heard some 3-ways that I truly enjoyed, but perhaps at this price point some design compromise is coming into play. Other possibilties... perhaps not the best combination of drivers selected, or jostenmeat just needs to get his hearing checked.

I wish I could A/B these with some bookshelves I listened to last week....

Get the VR3s and a VRC to go with them. I couldn't be happier with mine. I just grabbed a set of CR57s for rears. I wish I could afford another pair for bedroom surrounds because I've never liked the BICs that I've been using, but I've already spent too much on other hobbies this month.

I will see what happens and maybe I will at the very least end up with a pair of VR3s. The best thing about getting them would be not needing to get more amplication right away, as they are quite even loaded and with 93dB @1watt/meter I don't think I would need more than 25 watts per channel to drive them to levels past that of my neighbor's tolerance.:D

Great thread, as I am wanting to do the same thing. I should have never sold my Paradigm Studio 20s. My JBL E30's are nice, but they just lack some punch. I was looking into some JBL Stadiums, but I am glad to see I can get alot more speaker for not much more price wise.

Right now, $450 at CC will get you a pair of Boston VR2s, which are worth every penny of their $800 MSRP. That is an absolute steal (probably the best deal in audio at the moment.
