Missing out on DTS

Hi I need some help getting the most out of my DTS music DVD's.I have a DTS capable player connected via optical digital link to my SR7300 Marantz receiver. A digital dolby signal is detected when playing movies but when playing DTS discs the signal received by the 7300 is analog. I have no surround back speaker connected. Surely that is not critical to a 5.1 signal. Can anyone help?

Afro, make sure that the DVD player is set up to output the DTS signal as a "bitstream" and not "PCM". A lot of DVD players output the signal as PCM by default.

If you also have an analog connection between your DVD player and the Marantz, do you have the Marantz set up to select the audio input (digital or analog) automatically? From the SR7300 owner's manual on page 29, "The DTS mode cannot use when an analog input has been selected."

In addition, from page 30: "NOTE for DTS signal
* Connected DVD-player, laser-disc player or CD-player needs to
support DTS-digital output. You may not be able to play some DTS
source signals from certain CD players and LD players even if you
connect the player to the SR7300 digitally. This is because the
digital signal has been processed (such as the output level,
sampling frequency, or frequency response) and the SR7300
cannot recognize the signal as DTS data."

Just some info that might help explain what's happening.

It will only detect analog if you have analog connected, so disconnect the analog connections from that input if you have both and try it out. What is your player? If it is a PS2, there is an additional step to getting this to work.

Thanks for the replies guys. Have checked some more. Analog connection now disconnected. DTS on player (Panasonic EH55) is set to bitstream. Input for DVD player on SR7300 is set to Dig-AT. It's working fine for Dolby signals. However the receiver is still detecting the signal as analog. Weird. Do i need a specific speaker set up for DTS?

No you don't need to have 5.1 to get DTS. There is something else amiss.

When receiving a dolby signal what does it say on the receiver's display?

When a dolby signal is detected the display changes to read "Dolby D" but the dolby logo as such is not displayed. The the channel status changes to show all the channels. When in analog mode the channel status only shows the front speakers.

Sometimes there is a setting that is just for DTS, that allows you to activate or deactivate it. Panasonic has some odd players, I would guess the reason the DTS isn't working on the receiver lies within the Panasonic and not the receiver.

what is this dvd/dts music disc you are playing? you have a link?

are you sure it's not a DVD-audio disc instead of a DTS music DVD?

I'll look into the player settings. The DTS setting has bitstream enabled and that should be the correct setting.

An example of a DTS disc I'm using is Hell Freezes Over. It definately is DTS and has a blurb about it before the DVD proper begins. DVD audio discs are detected as digital and play in Dloby.

I've never had any problem getting DTS from a Panasonic player besides my A300U, which didn't have DTS at all.

Once it is playing, can you manually cycle through the available audio options? Have you tried other discs too? Every once in a while there is a disc that your player just doesn't like - my 2900 would not play Diana Krall: Live in Paris in DTS either, but once playing you could cycle to the track. They released a firmware update to correct the issue.

On the HFO disc, are you sure you are choosing DTS? There are two versions of this disc, one has Dolby stereo and DTS 5.1 only, and the current one has stereo, DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, but by default both will go with Dolby unless you choose DTS.
