the other night, in one of my night duty shifts to guard the baby ...

I was seriously contemplating ordering a HSU MBM because as per SVS, 220v units of the new ultra will not be ready for a "few" more months.

to save some money, I thought I could use one of my subwoofers as an mbm, if I could introduce a subsonic filter at 50hz.

I could have used a behringer crossover that would have cost around 100 bucks + rca to xlr and xlr to rca connectors/cables ...

I remembered majorloser? linked an fmod 50hz subsonic filter that cost 29 bucks. (unfortunately, shipping cost 15-20 bucks - yes it sucks)

to be continued ... lunch break ...

If you didn't live on an island, Mike, the shipping (literally) would........;)

You may need more than just the filter to make a conversion. The theory behind the fast response of the MBM is keyed off of its lightweight cone, a low inductance voice coil. It has a pretty beefy magnet, too. So you might need a driver to go with that filter. And whoa...there's the tuning of the box, and......

continuation ...

I remembered majorloser? linked an fmod 50hz subsonic filter that cost 29 bucks. (I later foud out, shipping cost 15-20 bucks - yes it sucks) well, i'm still ordering it ...

my future setup would look like:
option1: ultras 50hz down, dd18 50hz up (when the ultras become available)
option2: dd18 50hz down, dls-5000R/axiom 50hz up

did I do right in choosing the fmod adapter from hlabs rather than the behringer crossover?

behringer con:
an additional item to power up
more expensive, but more flexible ...

I sent an email to HSU that night asking info re: 220v; shipping to canada; taxes ... but never got a reply so I went ahead and ordered the fmod.

I realize the tuning of the mbm is much much higher, therefore helps with output ... but I'm thinking a 15" or 18" subwoofer placed right behind the couch (less than 2 feet from my back) should be able to cut it ...

i hate this island ... :D

A 15" or 18" driver is going to have A LOT of energy at those frequencies. You may have to attenuate the level somewhat?

What are you using for mains and surrounds? What is the -3db point on those speakers??? If your speakers are good down to 50hz or so, just lower the x-over point in your system.

Using a DD18 as a MBM seems like a total waste of a good sub. A 12" or 10" would do much better as an MBM. The ear is much more sensitive above 50hz and would require less output to balance the sound.

i think only my fronts are capable of a lower crossover ... but my receiver can only set a universal crossover for all channels ...

my surrounds are Infinity beta 10's (5.25" driver) -3db 60hz

my center is the c360 does 45hz (though I doubt that)

my fronts are the 50's whose -3db is 35hz (I sure am glad I bought these instead of any smaller variation)

re: DD18 as mbm ... I wonder if people can distinguish a flat, low THD 50-80hz between subwoofers. I mean, if people don't, I sure can use any other subwoofer.

re: attenuation ... I'll have an sms-1 to balance things out between the high bass and low bass
