Border Duty US to CDN

Hi, I'm from Ontario, Canada, and with our "loonie" par with the USA, I was wonder if any one know how much "duty" it cost, if I would purchase a receiver in the USA ? I have currently an Denon AVR 3805, great unit, but I can not plug in my newy HD-DVD with the HDMI and enjoys the TrueDD. So I would like to purchase the AVR 3808, but in Canada the retail price is $1999 ! plus $300 of tax !

In the internet I see the price range between $1199 to $1499. That can be a saving up to 50 % . So what are the + and - that I don't know, beside the warrenty void.

In the past I purchase my JBL suround speaker in the USA via inter-net and I end up with a good deal, but purchase of suround speaker and receiver are a world apart...I think.

I have no idea what the duty might be, but the Canadian Customs office would.

Now, does that 3805 have the 6 ch analog audio input?
If so, then just let your HD DVD player do the digital to analog and output it on the analog outs and you will get the same results; no need for an upgrade.

The US and Canadian dollars are at par right now.

To the OP, my wife looked into this a while ago and claims up to 4% duty depending on country of origin, plus 6% GST and brokerage fees.

Take that for what it's worth...it's not gospel, but she's rarely wrong.

For the video yes, but that can go direct to the TV from the DVD player.
The hi def audio would be converted inside the HD-DVD player to analog, then by the 6ch analog audio to the receiver. Same outcome.

Not at all in my opinion. I love having uncompressed HD sound. On movies I have noticed much more dynamic tracks which I find much more enjoyable. I think what everyone here is telling you is that you don't need HDMI to get this sound which is very true! You can just use the analog output from your HD player and run them to your receiver. Doing this has the player decode all the lossless formats and transfer them completely uncompressed via the analog outputs. After that your receiver simply sends the signals to the speakers.

You still get full HD sound with this method, its just cheaper since you don't need HDMI .

All you have to do to achieve this is take 6 RCA cables and plug on into each part of your Analog outs (one per speaker including sub). From the HD player to your receiver. After that you are golden! Just set up the receiver to read the input properly and if needed set the HD player to output audio via analog.

Yes, as avaserfi said and a bit of clarification if needed.
Your HD-DVD player will be doing the decoding instead of the receiver. No big deal as you will be getting the uncompressed audio, CD quality.
You do have to set the DVD players analog audio though as if it was the receiver, setting distances and maybe even levels, not sure about the latter as I don't have this feature.
