Well I told you guys I would let you know my thoughts on the DLP so here they are.

My original purchase was 50” plasma for my HT system. My listening/viewing area is 11.5 feet from the display and after 6 months I decided the TV was just not big enough. I wanted to get a PJ with a 100” drop down screen but doing this proved too much since we have 14ft ceilings and the wife has a custom ceiling fan right where the PJ needed to go and there were no other mounting options except a motorized system coming out of the ceiling which was just too expensive. I had never considered a DLP and even considered it a step backwards from the sexy flat panels. My dealer finally talked me into trying out the Mitsubishi Diamond 73833 which is their top of the line 1080p 73” DLP with 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs.

My plasma always looked pretty good with SD so I was shocked when I plugged in the Mit and tried to watch SD TV; the picture was one of the worst I have seen. Well, onto BR movies I went and they were very nice- deep dark colors, nice big picture, absolutely beautiful. That’s good but you can’t watch much live football, golf and NASCAR on a BR DVD and hey, I watch a lot of those 3 things. I tried a few more times but just couldn’t get over a square golf ball, motion blur of a running back flying down the field or a fuzzy car going 200 mph. I was to the point of returning the TV but decided that the 73” was just showing me what was there all along. I went ahead and ordered HD DirectTV with a promise of 15 channels now and 100 more coming soon. All I can say is wow! I have heard people say that the 1080i from DT isn’t that impressive but I have to disagree; it is very close to the picture I get with my BR. Even the SD looks better with this new box and dish. My wife is in love with the TV and I have a hard time getting her away from it now, all she says is “you did a very good job with this HT”. I smile every time I walk by my set-up; it looks awesome, sounds awesome, it is awesome.

When I look behind the TV and see that it is 17 inches deep; I sometimes miss the sexiness of my plasma but hey it’s in my bedroom and if that’s not good enough, there’s a LCD in my office. You couldn’t drag this DLP out of my house at this point; it is here to stay.

I would love to have the 73-inch Diamond Series Mitsubishi. My boss and I were having a little discussion about it. He has a 50-inch Pioneer (not Elite) plasma and he is extremely PROUD of it. But I said, "You cannot begin to compare a 50-inch of ANYTHING to a 73-in Diamond Series Mitsubishi 1080p! If you had a 70" Pioneer Elite Plasma, then it's no question. The Pioneer Elite would win. But to compare a 50" Pioneer PDP-5000EX to a 73" MIT Diamond DLP is a JOKE."

The only way I would not buy the 73-inch MIT Diamond is if Mitsubishi made a bigger one!:D
If they cannot make a bigger one, then the 73" Diamond Series will be my next HT purchase.

Now if I could just learn to take pictures that you can see...huh...

I have tried with a flash, without one. With a tripod, without one...

Yeah, I think you need a lot more lighting--like sunlight.

The beauty of my house is no direct sunlight hits any windows so the cooling cost is very cheap which is important in Texas. The downside is crappy pitcures.

Just dim down the ring of blue LED's on the DirecTV box and you will be good to go. Just press the two buttons on the left and right side of the ring at the same time and it will dim down, and go off if you want. Very nice TV, I'm jealous... my 50" Samsung DLP just looks small in my house now, but I can't afford a new tv anytime soon. Besides if I did get a new tv, it would be 1080p, and since my receiver doesn't pass 1080p, I would need a new receiver as well.

No kidding; the old DTV box had the same blue lights as the EMO and TV but the new one has turquoise lights. Thanks for the info on turning it down; I have yet to read the manual.

I dont pass any video through my AVR but only because I cant;)

I think I'm in the same boat. I'm saving up my HT piggy bank so that I can buy a 73" or bigger 1080p DLP in the hopefully-near future. You think they will make a 80" 1080p DLP?:D

Yeah, it always seems to be 10 degrees hotter in Texas than Oklahoma.

Greg,

Thanks for the review! I must say that before I had a 50" display, I had a standard 32" CRT, so going to a 50" screen was like blasting off into outer space. I am very glad I chose the set I did. It does very well with SD and exceptionally well with HD signals. I think 50" is a good balance between size and image quality. I'm surprised at how much bigger 50" is compared to 32". I can only imagine what going to 73" is from 50". I had to compromise with my wife to get a 50" screen in the house, so I'm happy as far as that is concerned. Impressive set-up you have there.

Cheers

I always forget you are in OK. You should come over for the Texas/OU game
I do look forward to the annual Red River Shoot-out, but not the traffic:)

Those Sooners & Longhorns drivers are CRAZY!

By the way, you don't think Texas will win, do you?:D

I can't wait until my HT piggy bank is filled up again so I can get a new HDTV. That means I will have to pony up for a new credenza.

If you didn't have to compromise, would you get a projector or TV?

I've had a (500 lines of resolution) projector. Now a DLP. I can't really say which one I prefer. The only drawback I see with projectors is the contrast & brightness. I noticed the Epson projector that Audioholics reviewed. Great ratings. But I also noticed the brightness rating of 1,500 Lumens? Is that really bright enough? I think my old projector was 4,000 lumens. I can't go to a 1,500 lumens, can I?

I'm a fan of DLP. I have a Mitsubishi HD1000 projector and a DIY 73" screen (can't fit one any bigger in the space provided).

The picture is fantastic. HD-DVD and even upconverted standard DVDs are amazing. It's even watchable in daylight though I only use it in the dark.

My regular Tivo and analog basic cable signal look OK but I'd rather watch that on my 27" CRT.

I'm eying the new Panasonic plasmas that have the matte finish anti-glare screen for normal TV viewing. I just need some HD programing to go with it.

Yes Texas will win.

At first I thought the DLP was a compromise but now that I have it, I prefer it. You can turn on every single light in the house and open the windows and still watch the DLP.

So you would rather get plasma instead of projector?
How many Lumens is your projector rated?

My local HT store has two 1080p projectors--Sharp & Sony. The picture looks okay, but not even close to being as great as a Mitsubishi DLP Diamond Series.
My old SharpVision projector is 4000 Lumens. I remember being able to see the picture in bright light, but definitely not even close to being as bright as any DLP/LCD/Plasma TV in bright light.

So that's it then. No projector for me. I'm thinking about that 73" MIT DS DLP.
But I really hope MIT will come out with a 80-inch DLP.
...Then mine will be bigger than yours...:D

You are nuts.
And you were saying there was something wrong with me?

What do you think about NuForce amps and speaker that cost like $3K each?
Think they are for real?
