The big HD package is something like 10 extra bucks/mo here in Texas so no big deal.

I hope it turns out well for you. I was using a tivo with analoge cable service for quite some time... I'm soon to making the HDTV switch, but I'm not looking to ugprade the monthly fees I have so I planned on sticking with SD tv for a while longer... I flipped to DirecTV knowing that the image quality of that will be superior to that of analog cable.

I grok your misery, Dave. I dumped cable a couple of years ago and eagerly enjoy my Dish Network service. BUT...you may have the same issues with watching SD programming on your HD set even with sat service. Perhaps I don't understand the HDMI issues or the intricate nature of upscaling...perhaps the technology has changed...but when I tried HD with DishNet, the compression (or upscaling) artifacts ruined the SD programming so as to make it unwatchable. I had to change the resolution of the set for every switch between SD and HD programming in order to be a happy viewer.
I still have the Algolith Flea and it does a fine job of cleaning up the compression artifacts and provides a pretty good SD image, but the sat image is pretty good to begin with. Some channels are still worse than others, but the Flea makes them acceptable. Even the HD channels look better with the Flea processing, but not as dramatic an improvement since the source is so much better to begin with.

But then I'm a video dope. I don't know much about this end of the hobby a/v hobby. Come to think of it...I don't much about any of the hobby. I just like it. :)
Yeah, there's plenty of things I don't understand, either. I often feel like a stranger in a strange land around here, but I can't just run away and join the circus.

I totally agree with the title of this thread. I have been involved with hobby for close to ten years now and it just hurts so good. Sometime in the wallet a little to much.
