It is a well-established format, with the best known examples being Sonny & Cher and The Captain & Tenille. A female vocalist with a male instrumentalist.
It is still going strong today. Ones that I like include:
BitterSweet, The Fiery Furnaces, Goldfrapp, Vas, and Luna.
Any other good ones that you guys can think of?

How about Ian and Sylvia? Long gone, they were parodied well in "A Mighty Wind". Dewy eyed apparent lovers (but really not), they don't have much of a profile today, but influenced a lot of folk singers back then.

Hi,
I would add Dead Can Dance to this list. It is not a pure Duet but that group with be nothing without Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. They were even married for a time, but I do think that they split up.

Anyways, just my two cents.

Not all of my examples were like that. What they do all have in common, however, is a female vocalist with a male instrumentalist and no other band members. (double the formula and you get ABBA.)
