I'm curious. I just put on the Dallas Cowboys / NY Giants game.
My Yamaha receiver is picking up NBC's HD broadcast as a 3.0 (left-right-center) signal. What's up with that?
When I change the output to straight I can confirm that the sound is coming from the front 3 channels with no LFE.
Has any one else experienced this? I've never heard of a 3.0 broadcast.

I'm watching that game now too. Unfortunately, my TV is not hooked up to my sound system. But I thought by definition, HDTV has to be 5.1 Dolby Digital?

I don't think HDTV as always 5.1. The 3.0 thing kinda struck me as a bit strange however.
Oh well, I must have better things to worry about.

3.0 is kinda odd. I've seen 1.0 (really rare), 2.0, 2.1, 5.0, and 5.1 and that is with Time Warner digital cable. I've yet to see 3.anything or 4.anything.

I had that game on for a little bit, but I don't recall it being in 3.0. When I watch Jeopardy in HD it's only in stereo, the same with Wheel of Fortune, so I'm gonna say that just because a broadcast is in HD, it doesn't have to be in 5.1

Well, that stinks!:)

See I knew there was a reason I watch blu-ray/hddvd/dvd 99% of the time and watch broadcast only 1% of the time! Some of these so-called HD broadcasts don't even look as good as some SD DVD upscale to 1080i. No wonder most people don't even care about HDTV! 2.0 is really pathetic for HD. And to expect 7.1 HD anytime soon in the future is only a dream.

Most of the time the shows are broadcast in 5.1, but really what do you expect to hear from the surround speakers on game shows? But if you are using PLIIx decoder, you can still have 7.1 anyway!

I think the score is the important piece here and not how many speakers are going...lol...

Well, I was kinda hoping to hear the Wheel of Fortune spinning around and around in the room going from the FL to C to FR to SR to BSR to BSL to SL to FL:)

Sometimes HD games are in 5.1 audio, and sometimes they skimp and do 2.0. With that said, it sounds to me you might have a local channel broadcast issue. I watched that game, and it was in 5.1 for me.

My local ABC station sometimes fouls up their audio in similar fashion. Sometimes they'll broadcast live HD-sporting events in such a way that audio comes through the fronts, but with no center speaker audio:( Then I'll call my brother who lives out of state (who is watching the same football game) and the audio will be in perfect 5.1 at his end. We both use direct-TV SAT, so the local broadcast feed gets the blame.

For me, if there is ever technical problems with the audio, video, etc, etc, etc.........my local ABC affiliate is the slacker who screw it up. Never anyone else......

Maybe in your local market......the folks at NBC are the slackers:eek:

That was pretty much my suspicion.
I guess I wanted to see if any one else was having the same issue.
Thanks.
