Totally ignorant about Home Theater and very limited funds to improve my current equipment which consists of the following:
50" Hitachi UltraVision-won't replace until it goes
Yamaha RX-V659-Just purchased to replace 10year old Yamaha R-V902
Yamaha DVD-S659-Just purchased and hope it works out to replace oldToshiba DVD player SD3109
Paradigm Monitor 3s as front speakers
Paradigm CC 370 center channel
Paradigm PDR 10 sub
All the Paradigms were purchased new maybe 7 or 8 years ago(maybe longer)
I have been using two PSB Alphas for rear spkrs that I had been using as external speakers for the TV before I bought first receiver and dvd.
Any suggestions for good, inexpensive rear and maybe side speakers? I don't have a discerning ear and listening/viewing would be mostly movies and an occasional music dvd. I have been looking for used Paradigm ADP 190s or the mini, atom, or titan just to keep it in the Paradigm family, but am not locked in to them. As you can see, I am not a serious audiophile(?), but enjoy all the special effects at a booming level.

Welcome publicspirit. You've got a good little system going and you're on the right track regarding the surround upgrades. If you'd like a little/lot more visceral/bombastic impact, you might want to consider upgrading your subwoofer first.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just noticed that I did not include info about my living room. It is small-about 11' by 14' long. Does that impact your suggestion about upgrading the sub? Thanks.

i agree about the subwoofer upgrade, you are going to be upgrading quality aside from the spl ... check out hsuresearch.com ; svs.com ...

and if you don't have an spl meter, that would be real useful to enhance the effect of the rear surrounds (maybe make them a few db's louder); aside from calibrating all the speakers.

Thanks, Mike. I will take a look at the links you provided. I'm in no big hurry as I haven't begun to hook up the new receiver. I've put it off for about a week now and better get started. Ray

It looks like you have some good gear there so I am not sure what you are trying to change. Unless you listen to a lot of CD-A or SACD materials the PSB Alphas should work fine as surrounds. You are not going to gain much from upgrading your surrounds so if you are looking for more impact; it's in the sub. Get this thing calibrated properly and see if something is missing and we can go from there.

Definitely agree that replacing the sub with an HSU or SVS is the way to go. Is there something sound-wise about your current rig that makes you want to upgrade or do you just have the bug?

I think it may be the bug after upgrading my receiver to the Yam. 659 and adding a new pair of speakers. Still considering all suggestions. I think calibrating the speakers I now have needs to be done and I have a friend that will do it for me. I am also going to try rearranging the room although my option in this regard are limited. Thanks for your response. It seems that the people on this site really want to help guys like me out. Big thanks to everyone.

Your in Ohio. You can take a road trip right to SVS. I would do that even if I wasn't going to purchase a sub.
