Onix X-Sub vs. Athena AS-P4100

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller room (10 x 12) and in need of a budget sub. I'm looking for something more musical but can handle HT. I've narrowed it to these two subs. I've never heard either and wondering if someone out there has and can compare. The x-sub is 8" ($199) and the Athena 10" ($189). Despite the smaller woofer, I'm leaning with towards the x-sub as I believe the build quality is probably better. Thoughts?

P4100? I know there is a P4000...

Anywho, the Athena model isn't worth it. The Xsub will sound better from what I've read.

Hi rnatalli,

I have not compared them but I do own a x-sub and am very happy with it. I currently have it in my living room which measures 13.5' x 20.5' x 8' (if memory serves). It does well for CD music and DVD concert videos and ok for movies. I do have to push it very hard though becouse this room is too big for it and referance levels would surely sound bad if not be detructive to the sub.

My plans for it is for my family room or bed room that will have 2nd and 3rd systems not as nice as my main system in the living room.

I would think it to be a good choice for a small space like yours as long as you are not a bass nut that likes to dround in bass. If that's the case save more money and buy something from Hsu or SVS.

I'm aware of the Dayton as I own a Dayton for my main theatre, but they're more geared towards HT than music. I think I'll go with my original thought which is the x-sub. I'm not looking for something that'll will put a whole in the floor so I think 8" should be fine. From what I've ready, the x-sub goes pretty low as well. Thanks for the replies!

As long as you have one of these the x-sub should be a fine choice.

How rare I agree with Mazer! LOL! I can't speak for the x-sub, however I am very familiar with Athenas. Their speakers are well regarded by many, however their subs are generally considered to be underwhelming.
I would say go with the Onix over the Athena if those are the only two options. Assuming a 7' to 8' ceiling in your room, you won't need anything too huge, however an 8" is going to be hard pressed to get you very low with any authority. Have you thought about a PB-10 from SVS? There's one on the b-stock list now for $389.00. There's also the Hsu STF-2 for about $40 less. Pricier than the Onix, yes, but a little more horsepower. I just remember how crappy my old 8" sounded when I started cranking stuff up.

HSU just started a special today for the STF-1. It's $274 shipped vs. the x-sub for $243 shipped. I went with the HSU as it's available now.

And what would the STF-2 cost?

You have a PM.

I think you will be much happier with the HSU than either of the other two.

Happier how? The two are almost identical in specification and the X-Sub actually has a slightly lower extension. I don't think there is enough difference between them to make a huge difference, but the X-sub is a lot prettier....
