Bass Management AVR or DVD

I wonder why bass management is built in to both DVD/Multidisk players and AVR/AVP? Choose one or the other not both. I personally use the AVR/AVP for bass management. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you use it on the source then don't use it on the AVR/AVP.

My guess is that it just adds capability for those that don't have it in the other component (or don't even have the other component). It's probably quite inexpensive to put in to DVD players and makes a nice selling point. The same point can be made for surround sound decoding (Pro-Logic, DD, DTS).

Usually bass management on DVD players is only offered if it has DVD-Audio playback or SACD in conjunction with 5.1 analog outputs. The reason such a player has bass management is because most receivers today that have 5.1 analog inputs dissable all tonal controls and bass management, so that it is a direct connection.

Older players and changers initially started putting Dolby Digital decoders (note that most DVD-Audio players have built in Dolby Digital Decoding as well as DTS on most models supporting this feature) in a large percentage of players for those that had "Dolby Digital Ready" receivers from the early days of DVD. There are still many receivers out there in circulation that have 5.1 analog inputs but no onboard 5.1 processing.

There are still some generic DVD players out there that put the 5.1 analog outputs on their players for those on budgets that may indeed be stuck with an older receiver with only 5.1 analog inputs.
