Question about Home Theater

Well, I'm thinking of slowly working on converting the TV room into a quasi-home theater. Would an flat pannel LC really work in a theater setting? Or do I have to go projection?

I think that's a question of how big the room is and how far you plan to sit from the screen. I'm using a 40 inch Samsung LCD in my family room with 7.1 sound.

Yep; it all depends on how far away you will be. I started with a 50" plasma and found it was too small from 11 feet away. I just purchased a 73" DLP and it is perfect from 11 feet and still pretty darn good from 15 feet away. If I could; I would go with a PJ but it wouldnt work in my situation.

the room itself is about 550 sqft. Right now, the seating position is about 9 feet away. However, I'm thinking that I might add more seats in the back.. so I guess projection is the way to go.

Sigh, I just bought the TV a few months ago. Would it be possible to have a drop down screen and have it cover the tv?

I did the same thing. I went from a 60" CRT television to a 73" DLP. I sit 18' from it. Projection wasn't a option.

Absolutely! I did it. I have a 50" plasma with a 92" pull down screen for the pj. Works out great! The Clemson/Florida State game on Monday night in "stunning high definition" was great on the pj, especially since I'm a CU fan;)

IMO, it's all personal preference. You have a 52" TV at nine feet away. I think that would be just about right, but that's just me. I have a 27" TV at about 11 feet away. I want something bigger, but I don't plan on anything larger than a 50" screen.

Well, my personal preference is to have a theater-like presentation, meaning projection would be the way to go. I think the main problem will be additional cost and logistics.

I wouldn't know how to intergrate my current equipment (i.e. speakers) with a projection screen. As of right now, the center channel is located right below the tv (not flush, but maybe 6 inches closer to the listener). The sound doesn't seem to be coming out of the image.. it's a bit too easy to locate and know that the sound is coming from under the display. I guess to fix this, I would need a second center, but I can only imagine that this effect would be amplified with an even larger screen.

Does anyone have any examples of how and LCD TV is incorporated into a decent setup? (i.e. mount, furnishings, stands, etc)

Do you have the center tilted up/aimed appropriately toward your ears? You might also try adjusting distance settings to see if it makes a difference. Many people find that a center positioned under the screen to be more localizable.

Perhaps to help with the center sound issue for both TV and theatrical use, it would help to position it over the TV. Then use an acoustically transparent screen which will cost a little more. http://www.seymourav.com/
