Anyone here with a V661 and a 7.1 setup?

I'm reading about the receiver not remembering 7.1 surround settings. Is this an early model issue or is it still a problem. If so, what are you doing to make life easier with a 7.1 system? Thx.

I assume you are refering the the 7.1 LPCM, I wasn't aware there ever was a problem.

I am not going to make your life easier, but then I don't work for Yamaha.

I read that the remote lacks the button for extended surround, and the receiver does not remember your 7.1 setting and every time you turn it off and on, you have to go back into the menu to activate it. That's rather dissapointing if true.

If that's true, it's pretty lame, and disconcerting, as I was planning on going 7.1 in the near future.

I have the 661 with 7.1. It is true that the 7.1 mode is set to auto by default, meaning that you have to go in and set it to on after you power it on if you want 7.1 from 5.1 sources. It is stupid, but not that big of a deal once you get used to it.

All you have to do is a couple of remote button pushes (watching the front display on the receiver if using HDMI, watching the screen if using less than HDMI). It's basically pressing menu, going to manual setup, then sound setup, then ext surround, then turning it on. From there you can toggle between all the options, but I just leave it on PLIIx. It does remember that part for some reason. I do it about two seconds and it's not a big deal. If you have a universal remote, you can set up a macro.

I agree that it's a stupid thing, but really isn't that big of a deal. Having the receiver now and loving it, I'd but it again even with this little PITA feature. I think the pluses far outweigh this tiny little minus.

And no, I don't work for Yamaha or do I gain any reimbursement from supporting them

Extended surround is the ability to apply processing via the receiver to sources that are not 7.1. It basically matrix's the surrounds into side surrounds and rear surrounds. Dolby Pro Logic IIx seems to be the most popular and the one I use.

Ya, the extended surround function defualts to 'auto' when it is powered off. Very dumb in my opinion. However, if you have a programable remote with a downloadable database (like Harmony or one of the MX series remotes), there is a discrete PLIIx code available. I think, but not positive about this... but I'm pretty sure that the 559 remote works with the 661 and it has a discrete PLIIx button.

Sorry, I don't. I use an MX 850. The last time I updated the software, it had three seperate 661 profiles to select from. All three had PLIIx discrete codes.

It seams logical to me that if the MX series has a discrete code, Harmony would have them as well.
