Speaker Stand Question?

Ok, so I recently got some speaker stands for my surrounds. I went with some adjustable VTI stands. It seems like it's hard to find stands ideal for surrounds. These guys will raise 5 ft off the ground. Ok, so here's the question. It seems as though many people fill their stands with sand to help with sound dampening, and also to help make the stand more sturdy (since it will weigh alot more). This will be my first time doing this, so I just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. Can this be done with adjustable stands? I may not be able to adjust it once sand is inside. Also, I have the iron cast type stands that are hollow on the inside. There is a hole at the top and bottom to run the speaker wire through, so if placing sand, is this even possible without getting sand everywhere and falling out. I know I may sound a little ignorant, but this is my first time using these type of stands. So, can these stands be filled with sand, and if so, can someone offer some detailed instruction on the best way to do it? Thanks all...

Generally speaking, adjustable stands are probably not meant to be filled, but if you plug the bottom, yes you could fill them with sand; you won't be running wire through them though. Running the wire inside is really kind of pointless anyway, IMO. 5ft tall stands seem excessive to me also. The rule of thumb is to have the surrounds above you, but I have mine stand mounted at the same level as my mains, which is ear level when seated and it works great.

I looked at a website that sells this particular stand and one of the features listed is that it is "sand-fillable". However, I bought this stand from Rackand stands, and it didn't list it as a feature there. So, anyway, if it's not meant to be filled then fine, but I would like to get a little more stability for the stand, if possible, and if the sound quality can be improved then I'm all for that.
As far as height goes, the reason I set them to 5 ft is b/c that's what THX recommends, 2-3 ft above ear lvl, but whatever works is fine with me. I guess I can lower them. That's why I went with adjustable stands, so I can experiment. Getting the best sound quality is what I'm after.
