I am considering paying a company to hook up my Onkyo 605, Sony Blu Ray, Cable box. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the prices, or level of difficulty. A little background, I am going to have them run a speaker for me (very difficult run and I don't have the tools/or knowledge.) So while they are there I am thinking of having them hook every thing up, $99.00 for receiver, $39.00 per component. The saleman tells me this includes wire management, set up of the reciever (i guess that means adjustments to the settings for optimal sound??) Any thoughts from you guys b/c I a complete noob. Thanks In Advance.

It's really not hard at all to connect the cables to the proper inputs on the reciever. Just take a little time to research and save yourself some money. You can still have them come out and run the wire, but don't waste your money on having someone plug in a few cables, that's just ridiculous.

To me, part of the fun is hooking up everything. At first, it may be frustrating if you are 100% new to this hobby. But after you hook up everything yourself for the first time, you will feel great about it:)

I have never opened up an amp or any electrical components. But I have never ever hired anyone to hook up any cables for me. It's time consuming, but painless.

I guess you don't even have a friend who can do a simple hook up?

Speakers: What kind of speakers? In-wall wiring? If not, then just connect the speaker wires to the Onkyo 605.

Sony Blu-ray: one HDMI cable output to the HDMI input of the Onkyo 605. One HDMI output from the Onkyo to your TV.

Cable Box: What kind of output is available? S-Video? Regular RCA? Digital Coax or Optical? Okay, hook one Digital Coax or Optical from the Cable Box to the Onkyo input. If you just want volume from the TV, then just hook the digital optical/coax or RCA from the cable box to the TV directly. Connect the Video output of your cable box to the Onkyo or TV or both.

It is ridiculous to pay someone $39 to hook one HDMI cable from your blu-ray to the receiver.

Depending on where you live; almost anyone on here will stop by and show you how to do it for 2 beers. This way you learn to do it yourself so if something happens and you need to remove or change something, you dont need to call out the CI.

That's right, I'd be happy to show you hook it up, and calibrate your levels for a few beers.

We should have a local assistance help thread. We can say where we are located, and what types of things that we could assist others with, that way when someone needs help, they can see who might be in there area that can help them. Or we can see who has what equipment so others can have the chance to demo before they buy. I would love to have been able to demo an SVS sub before I made the purchase.

That is a good idea. In the intirim, there is the "Location" field that we can fill out in the User CP. Not as clear cut as your idea, but its a start.

AVRAT- yes, i was able to get it hooked up and everything sounds good. But I guess I'm second guessing myself. Also I'm a little nervous about setting the receiver up (changing settings etc.)

acudeftech- bose 5 cubes/ 2 hometech in the wall/ klispch sub.

I think you guys have talked me into doing the hookup myself. Thanks for all the replies.

I agree so everyone over my house on the 14th when my new credenza arrives. Not that I don’t know how to hook up everything; I am just tired of doing it;)
