Speaker Help?

I currently have a pair of KEF RDM3s, coupled with a SVS PB 12 Plus sub. I have KEF surrounds as well, I forget the model. My wife thinks the RDM3s are too intrusive and would prefer that I move to something less obtrusive in the room, so I'm looking for a bookshelf. The speakers are currently set on either side of the fireplace, about a foot from the wall. She would like to have that space uncluttered. And no, I can't get a new wife, which is probably the simplest solution.

What should I be considering in pairing up a pair of bookshelf speakers with this sub? I think the SVS is too big for the room (size wise, not sound wise), and I'm thinking of returning it and replacing it with the SB 12, which looks to be considerably smaller.

My budget is in the $1500 range and this system is used for HT and music.

A good bookshelf plus the stand is almost the same footprint as a tower. Are you sure she will be ok with this? In my opinion the BS and stand is less "intrusive" but then again; you're not married to me...

Ah, good question. I left out one detail. There are bookshelves against mounted on either side of the fireplace/television and I planned on putting the new speakers there. The shelf heights are adjustable, so they should accomodate most bookshelf speakers. They may be a little high if I put them on the top, but I can live with that.

Would you be replacing the center channel as well in order to keep the front sound image timbre matched? If not then you will probably want to stick with KEFs. http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=31308

I think I am going to keep the KEF as it fits nicely between my television and the mantleplace. Thanks for the link.

I'm not familiar with the speaker in the link. I'd appreciate your opinion, especially vs the RDM3.

Upon research, during the time of their production, the RDMs (Monitor series) apeared to be a product line between the Reference and Q lines. The newer XQ series is also in this position. Unfortuately i've never heard either one so I can't give any kind of insight.

My 2cents....

Put your people skills to work and keep what you have. If she loves you, she'll want to make you happy which makes it pretty easy to negotiate beyond WAF issues as it relates to HT stuff.

Of course, this only applies if you really want to keep what you have. If you secretly(deep down inside) also want to downsize to lesser speakers, the above does not apply.
