Okay, so here is what I bought:

Onkyo TX-SR705
Samsung HP-T5064
Polk RTi8 (2)
Polk CSi5
Polk FXi5
HSU VTF-3 MK3

Now, what in the world do I need for cables? I will be feeding this off of SD Direct TV box until I can get the HD Direct TV installed. I currently have an el-cheapo DVD player.

Can you tell me what I need to hook this all up and what brand/vendors?

Thanks,

You got yourself a pretty good system there!

I think most of us will agree that Monoprice & Blue Jeans Cables are it.
If you have a really small budget for cables, Monoprice will do.
If your budget is a little bigger, Blue Jeans Cables are great. You can custom order the lengths of all your cables at BJC.
If I weren't so cheap, I would get all BJC.

I imagine you'll need a Coax cable from the wall to your SD Sat Box (DirectTV may supply this). You'll want the best video connection possible in this order: Component, S-Video, Composite. For audio, you'll probably be stuck with Red/Blue RCA, unless the box has Digital Coax or and Optical output.

I would suggest you get a better DVD player at some point. An upscaling one at the very least (Oppo Digital has some very nicely priced ones), but you really probably want to feed that TV some HD source material, so you may want to look into a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player.

If you stick with el-cheapo DVD, you should use component cables for video, and digital coax (any 75 ohm RCA Cable will work), or optical cable for sound.

You will also obviously need speaker cable for whatever length you wish to run. 16 gauge is fine for anything under 25 ft, and 14 gauge for any runs longer than that. On top of that you'll want one RCA cable to hook up your subwoofer.

For now, it doesn't seem you have any HDMI components, so HDMI may be a waste of time, if you really want, you can use HDMI from the reciever to the TV and have the reciever do the upconversion for you. Keep in mind this may or may not improve the picture (i'm betting it won't make a ton of difference).

If you will have all HD components with HDMI, then it's really easy. Say you have the HD Satellite and a Blu-ray player. Then You need one HDMI from the Onkyo to your TV. You need one HDMI from your Blu-ray to your Onkyo. And you need one HDMI from your HD Satellite to your Onkyo. So that's a total of only 3 cables. Sweet:)

No offense to everyone else, I know monoprice and BJC are pretty much everyone's favorite, but I like TendonUSA's cables. They are inexpensive, look nice, have a lifetime warranty, and ship free. good stuff.

As long as you don't need custom lengths or longer lengths than usual, TendonUSA is a great alternative.

But if you need a 39 ft coaxial, or 41 ft optical cable, or 17 ft HDMI cable, Blue Jeans Cable is it.
