complete my 2.1 setup

Hi everyone,
I currently run a Marantz 2230 receiver to a pair of Paradigm Reference Studio/20 speakers and would like to add some low freq for HT.

The room is approximately 14"x20" carpeted. I am considering a Cambridge Soundworks BassCube 12 subwoofer. I'd like the convenience of a built-in amp however since I'm a convert from car audio, I recognize the huge advantages to separate amplification.

I'm mainly looking for a subwoofer that would best match the size of the room, but more importantly, blend in well with my current setup. I'm a casual listener who wants to dance at the top of the diminishing returns curve. (You guessed it, I'm a college graduate with limited funds.)

Any tips/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

P.S. Budget of $200-$350. Thanks.

Thats a decent size room. E-mail SVS, and HSU and ask their recommendations for that room.

Wow thanks for the quick reply. I noticed that a large number of the forum members here suggest svs or hsu subwoofers. I've personally never heard either of them. However, I do know what to expect out of the subwoofer, and that's clean, accurate, tight, heart-pounding bass. I can't stand loud muddy bass.

The subwoofer is a critical addition to my system and I prefer to make a very educated purchase...looks like a lot of research and reviews to read.

Does anyone own a SVS or HSU subwoofer that lives in the bay area? I'm in Danville,CA 94526 and often drive to the city(San Francisco). I'd love to hear/demo either of those. Thanks.

If I were to try out the DIY route, I might be able to make use of a car audio RE HC 12" subwoofer(rated 1200rms) I have laying around. Googled it and looks like it has been done and performs decently. How do I go about finding the right amp(500rms+) for this project? Thanks.

Currently I'm looking at the Behringer EP2500 for about $320 shipped I get a 2 x 1200 Watts in 2-Ohm/2400 Watts in 4-Ohm bridged. Overhead and room for upgrade wouldn't hurt since the EP1500 is about $290 shipped for 2 x 700 Watts in 2-Ohm/1400 Watts in 4-Ohm bridged operation

if you are serious about staying under $400, get a used SVS or give HSU a call. Or go the DIY route.

Well, I have box building materials in storage and the subwoofer is just laying around, so they aren't added costs. Don't get me wrong, I bet the SVS and HSU subs are great, but only the stf-2 is within my budget. And I'm not too keen about a 10" sub. The room is quite large and I need at least a 12" sub to handle the job. Still looking around to weigh the options.

If you're open to the DIY route, check out Rythmik Audio. I built one of their sealed 12" kits a little while ago. It was totally easy and the sub is great.
