pro/pre with amps final three

Out of curiosity, what is the appeal or advantage of a $4-5K unit compared to a receiver (with pre outs if you like) at 1/4 the price?
We have been through that on the OP's last thread, as well as this one. It is apparent that a sales rep is doing some arm twisting.

I have mentioned that none of the separates are going to drastically change the sound of the current speakers.

Also, the OP wants the system to jam like their car system. I mentioned this is not going to happen using the current 8" powered sub.

If this system is getting 5k invested in it, the best thing to do is replace the sub, and the front three speakers. That is, if the current receiver(Yamaha 2500) has all the features/connections needed.

I would replace the sub first. This will make the most drastic change. Then, if the mains didn't please, change them and the center. This will, by far, make the most of the 5k.

zumbo,

You think that my main problem is from the small sub. the super cube II. I really want to change everything, amp and speakers. I sold my projection tv and got a projector and screen, and got a nice logitech 1000 remote. so what next to change was amp and speakers. I wanted to leave the sub for last, because i really don't crank the bass that much.

zumbo, you think adding another super cube II will help.

Had a quick look at your speakers. If you want to rock, change speakers and sub first. But if you're not a bass-head, perhaps that sub won't matter as much. Adding another SuperCube will increase your bass by 6 dB, in its range, but won't really get you more extension. Since you're putting so much money into this stuff, I'd get a better sub as well (SVS, HSU, Velodyne or DIY!).

Here's the order I would change things:

1. Speakers
2. Sub
3. Electronics

You will get the biggest overall change out of #1. Shop for something you really, really like. Then, see if you can audition them in home, or somehow take them back if you don't like them. You have a great budget. Start with speakers.

I thought i had gotten a very nice sub when i got this super cube. so is this super cube not very good. that is my idea. i want to change out my speakers first than my electronics. I had no idea that my sub was a pos. I have just come to understand that i don't have to have towers up front. you know how we men are, bigger got to be better. first think to go are all my AR phantom speakers........ for sure

Well, I wouldn't say that the sub is garbage, but it probably doesn't provide the type of slam and/or depth that many people are in search of. Of course, your listening habits, room size and program material may make my opinion irrelevant.

In my experience, DT's low end is usually over-rated. I owned BP2002TLs for some time, and have listened to many of their products in stores. They're not crap necessarily, but that SC2 ain't gonna hit 14 Hz (I think that's its rated low end).

You're also right that your speakers don't have to be floorstanders; there are plenty of stand-mounted speakers out there that can rock. When shopping, just make sure you find the ones you like!

Since you will need a better sub for sure, I would do that first. You should be able to get a good bit of money from your DT. Keep it for now, and try an SV sub. Or, see if a local shop will let you demo a sub at home. Not a DT.

Then, move on to speakers. Sometimes, a good set of bookshelf speakers with stands will cost about as much as towers. It really depends on what you want. I like towers myself, but I absolutely love the B&W 805S bookshelf. Don't even think about it, out of budget for you and me both.:( $1249.99 retail. EACH

If your receiver has the connections/features you need, I am 100% sure a replacement is not needed.

I myself like tower more, but just being open minded about bookshelfs. I will look into the sv subs, and thinking of giving the paradigm bookshelf studio 40's a audition.

So the 40's are $1449 a pair retail. Plus, you have to buy stands.

The 60's are $1899 a pair retail. No stands needed. So you see, a floorstander cost just a little more.

See if you can get the dealer to let you demo a Paradigm sub at home. If they know you are interested in the speakers, you may have a good chance to pull this off. A Servo-15 would be a nice demo.:D I would not buy the Paradigm sub. Just try it.

If you like the speakers, the price looks fair.

For the price of the Paradigm speakers, I would prefer Monitor Audio. See if you can find a dealer, and try them out as well.

You can get the 40's for less than that from a good dealer. When my friend was interested in the 20's and 40's the dealer was going to sell him the 40's for $1100.

I spoke to the paradigm dealer yesterday, and to audition the speaker is by appointment only. i guess they are usually not at the store. out in the field working. 1450 for 40's and 1800 for 60's studio series. i don't know if the 40's are included with the stands.

Probably working on selling the store. Paradigm dealers seem to have a hard time.

And before anyone starts slamming, let me say this was the exact same experience I had with twenty cents years ago.
