Audio Cable Connections

I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on any sounds with my wiring setup. Here is how it's wired...

HDMI Blu-ray DVD to Onkyo receiver
HDMI Onkyo receiver to Samsung monitor
DVI/HDMI cable box to Samsung monitor
L/R RCA cable box to Samsung monitor
Optical cable box to Onkyo receiver

Since I only have digital connections to the receiver, am I missing anything by not having analog connections from the DVD and cable box to the receiver?

If you have HDMI from your cable box, you would not need RCA or Optical wires. All you need is one HDMI from the blu-ray to the Onkyo, one HDMI from the HDMI cable box to the Onkyo, then one HDMI from the Onkyo to the Samsung TV.

Am I missing something else here?

I think the cable box has a DVI to HDMI cable that runs to the receiver which would mean the optical is needed to get audio. Also, it might be that the RCA cable from the cable box to the TV is so the TV speakers can be used if watching the news or something else as not everyone likes to watch all TV programing on the full HT.

That and also many cable channels have analog audio only and without the analog connection you won't get sound from those channels.

The new HD cable boxes have problems passing audio through a receiver with hdmi.

If you want to get rid of the analog l/r cable to the tv you could call your cable company and get them to swap out the cable box for a newer one. I just got time warner cable and they gave me the new SA 8300HDC box which has hdmi.

I have DVI/HDMI out of my Motorola cable box. When I connect directly to the receiver, I get the dreaded HDCP error. Charter said to return the cable box and swap it for a Scientific Atlanta, but I didn't want to fool with that. They are about 20 miles away in Atlanta traffic.

Even the new SA boxes will give you the HDCP error. Only thing you will gain by swapping is hdmi from the cable box so you can have just one cable going from the cable box to the tv.

This is not an issue. All my channels with pass audio to the receiver via the optical connection.

Man, I'm glad I don't have a cable box!
I'm the opposite of what Bill Gates & MicroSoft want. The only thing I watch are DVDs, Blu-ray, HD DVD, and FREE HDTV Football.

I have over 30 movie channels, all either digital or HD. My cable including internet is $107 per month. Not a bad deal actually. And, I believe the SA box will resolve the HDCP problem.
