But I Already HAVE a DVD Player!

I haven't had a person come to my place and NOT see a very noticeable improvement in video quality when I show them the better looking Blu-ray titles.

I also don't follow this arguement that "I already have this on DVD" Then buy films you DON'T CURRENTLY OWN...wow that seems very difficult  I have purchased a few replacements, but most of the titles I have been buying are all ones that I don't own / always wanted or which are new titles. When DVD came around, don't tell me you were also whining "But I already have this on VHS..." I currently own exactly zero VHS tapes.

I do think there is less of an improvement going from DVD to the HD formats compared to going from VHS to DVD, however the improvement is still noticeable by the average person who doesn't even know there is a format war going on. That says two things to me - it WILL catch on but it will likely take some time before the general public fully shows interest in either format.

Not to mention, it isn't like you can't play your existing DVDs in the new players...

Wouldn't you get spoiled, though? I mean, if high-def is really all that, wouldn't it be hard to go back to standard DVD after watching a few?

If you're going to continue to use old technology waiting for the new technology to "shake out," you're missing out on the benefits of the new technology. I bought the Blu-ray. If HD wins out, I'll buy an HD-DVD. In the mean time, I'm enjoying the Blu-ray while you're viewing obsolete technology.

The biggest thing that bothers me going back from BD to DVDs is the grain and while I may not like it I do enjoy the content and keep watching. If given the choice I pick HD from netflix 100% of the time, but just because it isn't out on BD doesn't mean I don't won't watch it or enjoy it. It just means I am far less likely to buy it and that I can't be as critical about the video or audio.

Definitely. At first I didn't think there was that much improvement; I could see it, but it didn't seem like a vast leap. It wasn't until I went back and watched an SD DVD that I really noticed how much improvement there is, especially on the best looking titles.

Yeah, it's hard going back to SD once you have HD. But some SD DVD upscaled to 1080i look very good, and if the story is good enough, you sometimes forget about the picture/sound quality. I also depends on your TV size and sitting distance. If you are sitting 15 feet from a 32" TV, you might find it very difficult to see a significant difference.

Mark my words: The winner of the format war will be whichever format the Adult Film Industry favors. How do you think VHS really got ahead? Every single new film medium is drive by porn. Look at the internet and tapes.

A few of the major adult film houses have already selected HD-DVD for the simple fact that it doesn't require any new equipment. Porn has the internet now, so it does not have nearly influence it once did on media so it will not decide this one.

And for those that don't/can't use the internet. There's HD-DVD quality porn :D

I saw an article on Yahoo about a week ago where they were saying that porn stars are afraid of HD formats becasuse you can see every detail, which means there will be a new foucs on appearance... LOL

It could actually lead to the studios that make this stuff to hire better looking girls, so it may not be all bad. But I'm not so sure I want to see some girls pimply behind in HD.
