Hi Guys,

I live in canada & getting some good decent speakers is a real struggle. Can someone please suggest some good mid level speakers , I am willing to sepend about 2000$ on a speaker package a 5.1 for now. I have the Yamaha RX-V2700 with a Pioneer plasma to go with the speakers I am looking at. I need to connect my PS3, WII , DVD & Satellite to the speaker system. I have been looking at the JBL L890 or Boston Acoustice Vr3 on ebay. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Before you get any answers, let me ask a few questions. What size room are you putting the speakers in? What is the ratio of music/movies/tv/games? Do you want floorstanding or bookshelf type? How do you feel about bass and low frequency sound effects? What region of Canada are you in?

Answer #1. Speakers are very subjective and what one person likes, another may not. You should find a way to audition your choices before buying, especially if it's a private ebay auction with no return policy.

In Canada the logical answer would probably be to start by listening to Paradigm, Axiom, Mirage / Athena / Energy, etc...since they are all Canada natives. Get a feel for the sound you like and then narrow down from there.

Future Shop has started to carry Energy (including the RC series) and also carries Athena. It may be a convenient place to start.

PSB is worth a listen, but they are power hungry suckers, and may prompt you to get a power amp to go with the Yamaha.

Looking at the thread title it seemed like this was for a different topic, oh well.:D

Seems like everyone in Canada is looking for speakers down here and everyone from down here are looking for speakers from Canada...

pats2306,

Out of your two store choices I would check out FutureShop first. At my last check Soundsarround does not do returns, only exchanges for 7 days, whereas FutureShop does staight up returns for 30 days.

I say this only in the event you wanted to demo some speakers at home. With FutureShop you can buy them, try them and return them for all your money back, with SoundsArround, you will get a credit at their store but not be able to take your money elsewhere if you cannot ultimately find something you like.

I know this from experience with a AVR that I got a reasonable deal on, but then found better elsewhere a few days later but could not get my money back. :(

Just my 2 cents

Michael

Totem Acoustic is also a Canadian company. They have a 5.1 system(Dreamcatcher) that I believe is under $2000.

Excellent recommendation. :D

On the Paradigm web-site they have recommended systems with prices for you to choose.

Also look into PSB speakers. The Alpha series is very nice. Also the Sub Series 6i subwoofer is very nice.

The formerly devalued dollar has allowed many Canadian speaker manufacturers to export profitably to the U.S., but has also made them expensive in Canada. The current rise in the Canadian dollar has made it very cheap for Canadians to shop in the U.S.

Honestly, if the OP is anywhere near the U.S. border, it makes sense to shop in the States right now.
