I've been shopping for a 42" plasma or lcd for a while now. Yesterday I was in Best Buy looking at the Sharp and Panasonic, and they showed me the Pioneer, that they could make me a deal on. The problem is that both the Sharp and Panasonic are 1080p, and the Pioneer Elite is only780p.

I will be using it as mainly everyday TV viewing and movies. I will be viewing from a distance of 10'. A 42" screen is the maximum size I can go without remodeling, something I don't want to do.

Should I go with the newer technology, 1080p, or is the Pioneer Elite on par with the Sharp and Panasonic?

I don't own it, but here's the review that Audioholics did on that TV.

Edit: Oh, and at 42" and 10 feet you're probably not going to see any difference in a 720p and 1080p TV.

That's a nice panel! All I can tell you is that a friend of mine...who also owns a high-end custom install shop, was invited by Pioneer to compare a bunch of panels (6 I think) different manufacturers...Panny, Sony, Sharp etc and a Pioneer Plaz as well. Along with several other industry peeps. All of the TVs were 1080p, demo'd with the same source material. Each panel was scrutinized heavily...colour, contrast, video processing, refresh rate, blah, blah for quite some time.

At the end of the session, they all agreed that every panel was good, but the Pioneer was still way out in front...in nearly every category. It was at this point that the staff conducting the session revealed that all but one panel was 1080p...the Pioneer! It was in fact a 720p panel!!!

So, don't put all your eggs in the 1080p basket. There's a lot more to a panel than just that number.

I'm pretty much set on picking up a 60" Pioneer plasma. I keep going out and comparing and LCD just isn't where it needs to be yet. I also have a cheap 50" model that I've owned for 3 years without major issues so I have confidence in plasma as a display technology. I just want something bigger... and incredible to look at.

I agree, I think plasma still wins...especailly in color reproduction. To my eyes at least its no contest yet.

I got the 60" Pioneer Elite (720p) and I have a Sony KDL50 XBR3 (1080p) and all I can tell you is that I like the Elite better than it. I would say roll with the 940.
