I have $1000 to spend on an audio system (no video).

This website has lots of suggestions for an A/V system at that price point.

What are the suggestions for an audio only system for $1000

To consist of speakers
receiver (or amp and tuner if you prefer)
cd player

That's $1000 - I'll add to that the cost of cables, shipping and tax.
My office is 17 x 20, carpeted/drywall, 8.5' ceiling

Thanks in advance,

Dave

For audio only you can get by with a cheap receiver and cd player. Put at least $500.00 into your speakers. That is $500.00 from internet based speaker manufactures. Let me dig up what I would get.

Onkyo Home Stereo Receiver (TX8522) - $269.00

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo-Home-Stereo-Receiver-TX8522/sem/rpsm/oid/154442/catOid/-12949/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Onkyo CD Changer (DX-C390) - 184.99

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo-CD-Changer-DX-C390/sem/rpsm/oid/80490/catOid/-12941/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Ok, that $455.00 in good Onkyo Electronics. You can go cheaper, but I wouldn't. You could save money by getting a single disk CD player. I'll let others find you speakers

But wait, even better deals!

Yamaha RX-V459 Black Receiver - 169.99

http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=87430

Sony CDP-CE375 CD Changer - 104.99!

http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=12126#

Now thats $275.00 in Electronics from Onecall. Do you want a sub/bookshelf speaker system, or just two small towers?

My reccomendations are always the same. Spend less than $100 on a CD player. Spend less than $100 on a stereo receiver (the one in my sig works). Then spend the rest of your budget on speakers and acoustical panels.

If your budget is $500 then you will have $300 for speakers. If your budget is $5000 then you will have $4800 for speakers and acoustics.

You would have $800 for speakers and in that price range...

Used...Totem Tabu's

New...Paradigm studio 20s

I can work with either bookshelf or tower speakers.

On a $500 budget I can understand your formula. On a $5000 budget, I suspect there are few if any audiophiles who would agree with a $100/$100/$4800 allocation.

Can anyone address the need for a radio antenna?

Thanks,

Dave

Can't help on the antenna but I'm trying to put together a sub and bookshelves as I believe this will give you the best bang for the buck. I looked at av123 and most of their speakers in your price range are back ordered. I then looked at Axiom and their cheapest sub is $470 for a single 8". For $30.00 more you can have a more powerful 10" from Aperion Audio. Let me piece this together.

Aperion Audio Intimus 532-LR Bookshelf Speaker - $360 a pair

http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-532-LR-Bookshelf-Speaker,5,20,5.aspx

Aperion Audio Intimus S-10, 10" Powered Subwoofer - $499.00

http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-S-10-10-Powered-Subwoofer,19,32,47.aspx

I know were over budget here, but this speaker system will sound exceptional. Let's try this with Aperion's 8" with a passive radiator.

Aperion Audio Intimus S8-APR, 8" Powered Subwoofer - $399.00

http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-S8-APR-8-Powered-Subwoofer,18,32,33.aspx

OK, here's the GOOD news. I'm an Aperion Audio owner, and they give you 30 days to audition their speakers in your home. Many do, but most don't pay shipping both ways if you don't like them. Aperion does! Here is the GREAT news. If you keep all original packaging Aperion will give you 100% back to Trade in / Trade up to a larger system. And they use 1" HDF for construction, not 1/2" or 3/4" MDF like many companies. Two finishes are available, Cherry and Piano Gloss Black. I have their largest Towers in Piano Black, and they look so sweet! And they sound GREAT!

I suggest the S8-APR sub for $400.00, and the 532 LR Bookshelves for $360.00. If the S8-APR sub isn't enough bass, you can trade up to the S-10 for $100.00 more.

OK, $760.00 for a great Sub/Bookshelf combo. Back to electronics.

Yamaha RX-V459 Black Receiver - 167.97

http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=87430

Onkyo DX-C390 6 Disc CD Changer - $149.00

http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=21714#

OK, lets see, $1077 shipped to your door, and the sound will make Daddy's office off limits to any children! Sorry I went over by $77.00 but there is no tax on the speakers, and probably not on the electronics either. Compare that to Best Buy, or Circuit City!

Hope this helps :) !

Ric, you moved up from the 632s to the 633s? I recall seeing a post that they (the towers) were calling your name, but I must have missed when you got them. Congrats! I'm really glad that you're liking your new speakers. You really make me think that I should try Aperion...heck, I recommend them enough. :) They just seem like a no risk purchase, and one of my best friends really, really likes his set.

PopDisplay, I second the Aperion recommendation (if that wasn't clear already). I don't know much about their subs. I just bought an SVS and have joined the legions of people that sing their praise. Excellent company with great products. Just one more option to consider. Their subs start off a little higher priced, though.

*Stealing thread*

Yes Adam, I'm listening to the 633's right now. They do everything one would expect from $1000.00 towers. I keep finding new sounds in music I'm familiar with, and just for giggles, I'm listening to R&B, Pop, Extra Heavy Metal, anything, I love these speakers. And at 42" in all Piano Black, they look as good as they sound.

*Returning to thread*

I hope I didn't miss anything. The Yammy I suggested has built in crossover and phase switch :). Plus a sub out RCA :). The bookshelves should do great crossed at 80hz. My 632 LR's did. It was hard sending those back!
