Hi to all members - Need all the help I can get!

Just bought a Yamaha RX-V2700 AV receiver and was searching for information on what type of speakers I should buy to get the best results out of it and became very confused in short order with all the information out there.

The RX-V2700 also has in addition to the Front LCR Speakers an extra channel at the front for a Left and Right Speaker which they refer to as Presence Left and Right which they suggest results in extra ambient effects produced by Cinema DSP. Question is this just marketing and if not what type of speakers should I be using here?

The room that will be used for this equipment is located in the basement and has yet to be finished. Is it a good idea to use a suspended ceiling with sound absorbing ceiling tiles or would it be better to drywall the ceiling? The width of this room is about 12 to14 feet and the length has not yet been determined but it could be 14 to 16 feet and if necessary for achieving better results, it could be as long as 22 feet. Could someone let me know if 13 feet by 22 feet is going to result in much improved results as compared to a room that would be 13 feet by 14 feet.

Realizing that the YPAO Parametric Optimizer that comes with the receiver is not going to do much for me when compared to the Audyssey then the more important for me to make sure that I use the right surround speaker system and perhaps have the size of room that might enhance overall performance.

The TV is an LCD 1080P Samsung model LN-T5265F.

I would appreciate any advice that members from this forum could offer me.

EDIT. Thought the Audyssey was a set-up disc. My bad.

I don't use presence speakers. I would start with 5.1, and add more later.

There are speakers in a variety of prices. What's the budget?

I was referring to the Audyssey for equalizing the speakers and getting the best out of them. Its not a system that I plan on buying and in any case it has to be set up by a professional.

No restriction on budget up to a point but would like to think that whatever I get will give me some pretty good quality results.

You could try PSB. They are out of Pickering, Ontario. They have speakers from $400 pair to $6,000 pair.

That Yamaha should drive damn near everything out there w/o issue. Buy for sound, don't worry about matching the receiver...

Putting the numbers into ModeCalc, it looks like 13 by 22 will yield more favorable results than 13 by 14. Keep in mind that that is a purely mathematical model.

I don't think there is anything all that wrong with using a suspended ceiling with acoustical tiles, but you will want to use acoustical treatments on the walls too, and if you want really good sound, adding bass traps would be a good idea.

If the treatments are sufficiently absorptive, you could go with hardwood floors.

Future Shop has started to carry Energy speakers including the RC line and some lower models. This will give you a chance to audition some decent speakers. Future Shop is asking top dollar for them, but if you like them, they might swing a deal for you or you can get them somewhere else cheaper. Also, Energy is another Canadian company.

Thanks Dave, I bought my Samsung from Future Shop here in Brantford and the sales guy was very helpful and did give me a pretty good deal on the tv, stand, etc. I do agree that FS does tend to be high priced and one still needs to shop around.

I'll be away all week but will look into it next weekend and let you know how I made out.

I agree. 13 or 14' x 22' will give you better room acoustic response, making sure to place our equipment on one of the short walls and placing your primary seating about 2/3 back from the short wall. Too close and you are in a null (center of room usually) or too far back (against the rear wall) and you encounter a higher degree of bass reinforcement and room mode interaction.

As you suggested I did go to Future Shop over the weekend and bought the whole Energy RC Mini series along with their 10" Subwoofer. Even with the 20% off it still is quite expensive but I'm sure I will enjoy the quality sound that they can produce. I will be installing the whole set sometime in December or January and will let you know how it performs.
