As I said up front, it was a bit of a stretch but I thought that for the reasons stated, youse would cut (pun intended) me a little slack here.

So far, everyone here seems to have gotten the point and played along, but you seem to have missed it andappear irritated.

Thanks, no really, thanks so much for your help, input and support on this one.

Hey Mark,

I've owned a Norelco 9160XL for a couple of years (cavewoman gave it to me for Christmas.) Before that it was Gillette Turbo 3 blade thingy at 14.00 for handle and three cartridges. Replacement packs are ultra expensive, but I must say it's the closest shave outside a razor. My problem is my beard is tough and the Turbo blades would only last about 3 shaves before they'd start pulling, with the Norelco I don't get as close a shave but, I don't have to worry about replacing blades, the battery stays charged an extremely long time, now I'm due for a new set of blades (which I'll get online.) Going back I've actually saved money with the electric. And the shave isn't terrible, one caveat: you probably won't be impressed with you first electric shave, you have to stick with it. I do recommend the Norelco it's a fine shaver, though a bit pricey (about 160.00)

Audioholics are a bunch of guys that love talking about audio and the camaraderie that goes with it. It'd be a boring place if the only threads allowed were impedance related.

Hi Mark, I been using a Norelco for years.
The most recent is one, I picked up at Costco.
One thing with electric razors, they all claim the same thing.
If you've just switched from a razor to an electric razor, you will have scar tissue. They say you won't get a close shave until the scar tissue heals.
So don't be discouraged the first few shaves.
I've always thought an electric razor was faster, and less of a hassle to use.
No shaving cream to apply, or run out of.
Best of luck with your health issues,
Rick

Thanks all. It looks like a tie between Braun and Norelco.

But since I've got an ancient three head Norelco from the 60's (it's coal fired ;)) that works moderately well (but I can't find replacement blades), I'll most likely go for a new, improved version of the same thing with all the bells and whistles (lift and separate, whatever). The fact that it's a bit cheaper helps somewhat, too.

I will want a corded unit, however. I've tried some battery operated trimmers in the past and when the batteries start to die, they don't cut the whiskers but rather resort to trying to pull 'em out.

Again, thanks, guys. It's nice to know that we share a wealth of general as well as audio knowledge.

Oh, for those lucky enough to be able to use "real" razors, here's a trick I've learned: Instead of using shaving creams or gels, I've found that by washing my face with soap and water and then rubbing on a (very) little amount of yer basic hair conditioner (Breck?) and letting it sit for a minute or so gives me a cleaner, closer shave than any of the specific "shaving" products.

Info from Consumer Reports.

Hey Mark, here's a clip Consumer Reports Jan. 2007
Sorry about the long post.
Quick Picks
Best overall value:
Braun FreeControl 1775 $40 CR Best Buy (foil shaver)
Remington Microflex 600 $70 CR Best Buy (rotary shaver)

The Braun FreeControl gives a very good shave, can be used corded or cordless, recharges in just an hour, has a quick-charge feature that allows for one emergency shave, and can be rinsed clean. But it can't be left plugged in without damaging the battery and doesn't have a charge indicator. The Remington Microflex 600 shaves well and is rinsable. It's quiet, can be left plugged in, and has a recharge warning light as well as a battery that lasts a long time between charges. But it takes 12 hours to fully recharge and can't be used with a cord or overseas without a transformer.

If you like to shave in the shower or use creams or gels:
Philips Norelco Cool Skin $70 (rotary shaver)

The Phillips Norelco Cool Skin rotary shaver is the only men's shaver that can be used wet or dry. It can also dispense creams or gels from separately purchased packets, and is easy to clean. But its shave was only adequate. Moreover, it takes 12 hours to recharge, can't be used to shave with its electrical cord, and is only one of two tested shavers without a long-hair trimmer.

If you're willing to pay more for a closer shave or extra features:
Braun 360° Complete $170 (foil shaver)
Philips Norelco Smart Touch XL $150 (rotary shaver)

The Braun 360° Complete had the highest score of any tested razor and was the only one with an excellent shave. It recharges in just an hour, works overseas, and can be used with or without its electrical cord. It comes with a self-cleaning system that pumps a sterilizing solution through the cutters, has a recharge warning light, and the quick-charge feature. But it is one of only three shavers we tested that can't be rinsed clean if you don't use the cleaning system, and is the most expensive shaver we tested (plus an additional $6 per month for the cleaning solution).

The Philips Norelco Smart Touch didn't shave quite as well as the Braun 360°, but it had the longest battery life (119 minutes, or about 24 to 40 shaves) of any shaver in our tests. It also costs a little less than the Braun 360° and is quieter and maybe a touch easier to clean on the road, since it can be rinsed. The Smart Touch also has a battery-level indicator, charges reasonably quickly, and can be used with a cord and overseas. But it can't be left plugged in without damaging the battery.

I've had 2 Braun Flex Integrals that i've had for years. I dropped the first on the kitchen floor and broke it after 2 years. I've been using it's replacement for about 6 years now. I purchased both at Fry's electronics for about $30 ages ago because they had taken $50 off the regular retail price at the time. I'm African-American so manual razers leave me with in-grown hairs that cause irritating bumps all over my face. The particular Braun I use has the sliding long hair trimmer with the blades facing perpedicular to the razer so I can use it to trim down the long hairs when they get to be too much for the foil. It has 2 foils with a trimmer mounted between them that gets the longer straighter hairs and gives me a comfortable shave. It will charge on anything from 12-240 volts and i've experienced no appreciable reduction in battery life over the years. However, I do run mine until the batteries die at least a couple times a year and charge it up until they are full.
I replace the blade and foil about once a year.

I've tried a bunch of them, and since it sounds like you have a really heavy beard like I do, you might not find any of them you like. Most of them feel like each individual hair is being pulled out of my face, and on a couple of the rechargable ones I've tried, it slows down when it hits a thicker patch, and that really hurts! The ones that don't hurt like hell, don't work very well either, and so I clean them up really nice and donate them to a rescue mission. I finally gave up a couple years ago, stayed with the blade, and recently switched to a Fusion after I got the free one in the mail, and could shave about twice as fast as before.

Good luck!

i used to have one of the older braun shavers, it predated the 360 series. worked great, used it for prolly 4 years until t he battery wouldnt hold a charge anymore. worked just fine with the cord, but i like to walk arround when i shave....

so i bought the 7526 with the cleaning base. that one's prolly going on 3 years old now. the base has started acting kinda funny, so i stopped using it, but the shaver still works great. braun is prolly the only electric that i will ever use.

I have to agree with hemiram on the Fusion; you cant cut yourself with that if you try.

One other thought is to get of the blood thinners; there is a likelyhood that you are just increasing your "nursing home years":)

Hey Mark

No matter what electric razor you end up buying, do not forget to get an upgraded power cord. You'll never regret it. An upgraded power cord will vastly improve the shaving experience making the old mach 3 six bladed razor feeling like an old piece of flint.

I just got my new Norelco electric razor yesterday, only $50 from Amazon.com and free shipping. It takes longer to charge than my previous one, but it's much quieter and does just as good of a job.
