Yamaha vs. Dayton

Hi all,

I'm going to be setting up an HT on the cheap for a relative. I have an old Yamaha YST-SW010 subwoofer collecting dust in my closet. His room is about 10 x 12 so pretty small overall. There's a nice nook in the front, right corner of the room that's perfect for subs. In any case, would going with an 8" Dayton sub from partexpress.com over the Yamaha be worth it? Here are the specs for both:

Frequency Response: 30Hz to 200Hz

Dayton
Woofer: 8" long excursion woofer
Power handling: 80 watts RMS

I'm betting the Yamaha specs are very optimistic as I doubt it really puts out 100W and goes as low as 30Hz. Plus, 6.5" might be a bit small. Opinions please

My money would be on the Dayton. But how do you like the Yamaha?

I would get the Dayton. Those Yamaha specs look extremely optomistic, it might hit 30hz, you just probably won't even know it . Besides who has a subwoofer with a 6.5 inch woofer, its soo little! Thats smaller than many floorstanders.

Do you have a model number or anything on the Yamaha so we can look it up? I am more curious than anything, but I am pretty sure the Dayton will be able to push much higher SPL's while the Yammie doesn't look like it has a chance of filling your room.

The Yamaha model number is YST-SW010.

I haven't heard it in a long time. If I remember, it wasn't terrible for small-room application, but I've heard a lot of subs since then that sound much better, just not a Dayton 8".

I have a Yamaha, down firing, 6.5" sub (not sure of the model) also. It didn't have a bad sound in our bedroom that's about 14x16'. It surprised me a lot. But it couldn't hit those real low notes or play very loud. It would depend on what other equipment you will be using, as well as your friend's listening habits, if it's up to the task.
I am sure that the Dayton would do a better job if more is needed. How much better is debatable.

Ahh its a sub from a HTiB. Generally the weakest part of a HTiB in my opinion is the woofer so I further push you towards the Dayton. If money is tight right now you could always use the Yammie until you can get a better sub though.

He really likes Onkyo receivers and the speakers are still up in the air at the moment. He doesn't have a whole lot to spend. He didn't like the sound of my Mordaunts. From what I know, he prefers bright sound and east coast type sound so will probably have him check out Klipsch, Axiom, BA, and AR. He's had BA's in the past and loved them and there are some good deals at onecall and circuitcity so those may fit the bill.

It sounds like my concerns regarding the Yammie sub are valid. I'll push him towards the Dayton as I have the 10" model and think it's great. Thanks for the input!
