Flipping the sub bass amplifier around!

Last week I made a rather quick and simple decision or rather it was kinder on the tip off my tongue for a while but I couldn’t be asked to deal with it.

Since I brought the Eltax A-12 R a few years back its had a mild humming sound. So after looking it over again and doing a few tests via removing the sub bass driver and while still powered up, I noticed the humming dissipating. Hmm now what can this be, I know there’s a transformer inside and I can see where its located in relation to where the sub rests in the enclosure.

It’s the magnet it’s too close in fact way too close to the sub, so I undid the screws and flipped the power amplifier around placed the sub back in and BINGO! The humming had been reduced by around -6db from 63dbc to 57dbc that was good enough for me I can barely hear it now.

So there it is a fast quick and simple flipping around of the amplifier makes a world of difference, I doubt I could have reduced it any further.

You like to tinker with stuff. Why don't you try running a normal 5.1/7.1 system, properly calibrated? At least then you wouldn't have to dissect the equipment every time or fiddle with the two dozen equalizers you currently have.

I was thinking about adding a few more extra height surrounds in early this week, but decided to delay that until at least five or six amplifiers are installed, anyway no rush.

Why would anyone in their right mind want 15 speakers, each with their own ProLogic processor and EQ? Surely with a background of a cinema projectionist you could learn a tad about how things really work. Jealousy? Give me a break.

How about you get an actual Dolby/THX Engineer to come and evaluate your system. I'm sure they would cringe in horror, but it doesn't matter - if you are happy, more power to you.

What is the system's ambient noise level at reference level? I mean if you are listening to a DVD at reference level and hit pause, how much buzz, hiss and noise are present?

Also, I notice that your electronics are sitting directly on carpet. Do you not consider that a fire hazard?

Not has much as it used to be, for example if I where to just turn it on without any RCA phone connected to it, there would be this humming sound, hence the transformer was way too close to the magnet!

So via placing the SPL db metre near to the sub and measuring the SPL where it was at 62dbc was quite unacceptable, and much to my surprise I managed to reduce the humming be as much as -6db so I’m more than happy with it now.

There is however a different humming sound or mild buzzing that produces a different frequency but that sound normal, it less audible than before.

Besides being sat on the floor I have never, never, never had such an incident, so when I get around to racking everything up, soon that is, that’s when things will start to come together.
