What a difference a Sub makes..

All I can say is wow. I just upgraded from a Audiosource 12" to a Outlaw LFM-1 and the difference is incredible.

The audiosource did produce LF but it never had the tactile feel that I hear others talk about. Also it never seemed to keep up with the source material and seemed to lag and not able to respond quick enough to changes in tempo.

Now with the LFM-1 every detail seems to pop and I've heard things in the Matrix (only thing I've been able to sample so far) that I've never heard before. Now I can truly feel the bass. I could even see my clothes moving during a few scenes.

Basically my point is believe the hype. A good sub makes a huge difference to the overall quality of sound.

Now I just can't wait until the 300 comes out on Tuesday!

adk congrats on your new sub purchase. Be sure to give us some specifics once you spend more time with it. Like you, I cant wait to see 300 either. A good friend of mine went and seen it and said it was awesome.

In my experience, going out to the movies is a form of audio-slumming. I expect 300 to have an amazing soundtrack once you get it in your home. Except for 'some' of the Imax theater locations and a few other high end locations, I'm typically left very disappointed with the public theater audio experience. There are some great theaters out there, but unfortunately.... they're not at the local multiplex.

I must say it has been a fun last couple of days. Every movie I play has so much more depth than my old sub. The other nice part is that my system is so much more balanced. I have Klipsch speakers which can sound bright or harsh and the new subs range really controls this much better.

I will post some pics tomorrow to show the difference between the two. I also hope to do some tests tomorrow where I switch subs while using the same scene.

I read a review of the HD DVD of the 300 that said the audio was amazing are really utilized the surrounds and sub. They said the video is so stylized that it will not be a reference disk for video but could be for audio. Here is a link to the review: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/300.html

How about a giant Rhino, or Elephant? I saw it in Imax and I was greatly disappointed with the bass. But the Bass sucked for the demonstration as well. Screw Imax.

Oh yes and depending on how its calibrated aligned equalized and where its placed can make for a seamless and indistinguishable partnership of the matching screen channels and sub bass or sub bass arrays the sub should be allowed to overwhelm the differences between the screen channels but rather accompany them with reinforcement at precisely the right moment.

The Empire in Leicester square delivers this with 16x JBL 4645C and a staggering 20KW on the LFE.1 alone and its quite untouchable!

My own JBL 4645 can reach 126dbc but that would be too much for taking in a small room, it rather gratifying it can reach this level so at least I know she up to the task.

The Matrix I haven’t played any great sound bites from these films in about 10 months or so? I might explore them later in the day at a quite level but loud, oh I’ll just experiment with them.

You don't need large explosions or cannon fire to have a powerful soundtrack. Anything and everything can be used to include low frequencies from the crashing of waves on a coast, to the pounding of horses hooves in the dirt as they pull a chariot, to something as mundane as a large stone dropping to the ground. One thing is for sure....... the local multiplex is no place to judge the audio content of a motion picture.


Yep......I expect 300 will deliver an insane soundtrack. I think it will be waaaaay up the list as one of the best examples as LFE content goes Look no further than scenes from LOTR for one example of a "Bows & Arrows" era movie delivering LFE content in spades. If you think about it...... there are endless examples of the same. In this modern age of audio...even many of the most mundane of movies have incredible soundtracks. I mean c'mon.... if the newer scary ghost movies void of warfare and explosions can incorporate incredible deep sound effects.....I'm sure 300 will find a way too....LOL

Yes, those waves can create lows, but at what level that would be lifelike? That can be experienced by anyone on the beach with sand or cliffs. Nothing like an explosion, the Shuttle taking off at ear bleeding levels.
Neither would a horse hoof sound that massive especially to the rider.

As to the local theater, that depends on the theater. If it is THX certified, it should be a place to judge. At home, sub ch can be out of balance to impress more which is allowed
