Well, there goes $300 down the drain!

I decided, after reading all the articles over the years to have my TV calibrated by a pro. I checked around and found a guy who's been doing it for some time, and the $300 price was what everyone seemed to get. I had done it myself using the Avia DVD, and it wasn't much different than when I had previously set it up by eye, using Discovery HD Theatre as a source.

He comes out and hooks up and practically the first thing out of his mouth is, "Well, I can see it's not too far off!" I should have had him pack up and leave, I would have saved $150 bucks, his fee just to come out. He spent a long time at it, and it did look good when it was done. Not really any different, but not really any worse. I compared the wrote down original settings to what he set them at, and there was almost no difference at all. I ended up backing the color level back to where I had it, one notch above the point it went to B&W, since it was just too much for my taste, but left it alone everywhere else, since =/- 1 contrast, tint, etc isn't a big deal.

I had a gun I wanted to buy, and that $300 would have almost bought it. Oh well, it's only money, right?

That sucks, I have never felt the need to attempt to improve my TV settings any further than I have, I think it looks spectacular now.:) The only time I would pay for that find of service would (maybe) be for a degauss.

I have always done my own calibration with VE or HTT (By Ovaion, basically Avia lite) and I have never had a need to even consider getting someone come and do a full calibration. If I had an CRT RP set, I might consider it because I have seen what that can do, but I would never own a CRT RP....

It's not down the drain.

You confirmed that your own efforts are as good as a pro calibrator's. $300 isn't that much for peace of mind with this display and all subsequent displays :)

Yeah, I suppose, but that gun is one I wanted a long time, and that one looked really good, and it ended up going for a really nice price compared to the usual local prices.

I guess I should have had more confidence in my own abilities. I somehow deluded myself into thinking that some of the worse looking channels would somehow look a lot better after calibration. Of course, they didn't.
