One of mine is bad, and I am sure the other one would crack if it was in use. Did you send back to CV?
Don't send them to CV......

I recommend 1 of 2 things....

1. You can buy a CV surround kit on the web and DIY for practically nothing.

or

2. Remove the 12" woofers from the cabinet(they come out easily), and drop them off at a local authorized repair shop and have them repaired for about $50-60 for the pair. You can do a zip code search on the CV website for a local shop who will repair them "in house". (you'll have them back within the week)

I chose option #2, and got my speakers back as good as new within about 2 business days. If you have yet to replace the foam surrounds, I'll guarantee you they're completely rotted. Even if they aren't cracked all the way through yet...they'll probably disintegrate to the touch.

Actually, I had one of the woofers replaced during the warranty period, so I have removed one before. That's why one has lasted longer than the other. Thanks for the tip.

To the OP, sorry to get off topic. Just thought it was cool for two members to have the same old year model speakers, and I got a little excited. Those were the days.

More questions :)

I was comparing the MS912 bookshelves to the 902i and noticed two differences. The 902i (the newer ones?) have a crossover type "1st order with DVP HF" and the 912 are 2nd order. What is the difference? The second difference is the driver size. The 902i are 5.25" and the 912 are 6.5" . My uneducated guess is that the bigger ones would have a better bass response which would be good until I could afford a sub. I'm not quite sure I understand why the 902i are more expensive, is it just because they are a newer model?

Also, I was comparing the Onkyo SR605 with the Marantz SR4001 and got way confused with all the differences in how they describe their system. From what I could tell the only major difference was that the Marantz put out 80w per channel and the Onkyo put out 90w. If I really wanted to have a high power system, wouldn't I need a seperate amp anyway? And I'm pretty sure both would be enough for my room as is. Are there any other differences that I'm missing? I would probably go with the Onkyo more since I'm finding more about them on google then I am Marantz.

I like the party speakers idea, I'm gonna grab an apartment next year so I'll definately keep that in mind :D .

I'm not going to use headphones. That to me defeats the whole point. If I wanted to use headphones I would just plug my shure E3's into my computer and buy a nice sound card. I want to be able to sit down and enjoy some high quality entertainment with people other then just myself. I think that sounds harsh.. it's not supposed to :) I'm just tired.

Update: I'll probably stick with the 42" display so I can have money for bills and to help pad the cost of the audio equipment.

Don't get all caught up in wattage. That is something that is normally used to sell crappy low quality systems. Either the Marantz or the Onkyo will do you well and a 10w difference is negligable.

Dang that was a fast response :). Ok, I'll probably go with the Onkyo. Any words of wisdom as to the speakers?

I haven't listened to the speakers you are considering so I can't really comment. Although I can say that the larger driver will probably yield greater bass response.

Ok, I think at this point I'm probably already going to be overwhelmed with how good it sounds compared to anything else I've really heard so I guess I'm just nitpicking the details now. Furter research has revealed that the 912's are essentially just an older version, which is fine for me. I know that technology moves fast but I doubt that my ears will pick up the difference between new 2-year old speakers and new new speakers.

I am curious however if anyone has anything to say about the x-ls bookshelves compared to the MS912.

Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry I'm Late...

Well for starters you got a nice little chunk of change that you spent on AV stuff in college... My hat's off to ya...

In grad school, I was dead broke and was gonna have to drop out if I did't figure something out... so I applied for a whole bunch of scholarships (a lot)... well to make a long story short... In the end... I picked up a GA/RA position, a full ride w/great $800/mo stipend, and last but not least 1 grand from Budweiser... so basically we went from zero to sixty in record time and all funds were used for "Educational Purposes"... I swear!!!! Just something to think about...

Anyhow, what I did was I got my projector as open box the month after it was disconntinued... off ebay with a square trade add on... saved $1000... and haven't had a problem ever...

You may want to ck into the Square Trade web site, you might be able to insure the referbed stuff... not sure...

As for speakers, I scored a pair of Studio Monitors out of a back of a van... that I finally blew in college... Ahhhh the good ol' college days... the new self speakers these days should do fine for now... trust me...

One last note... be very smart where placing your new toys... I say up high were people won't be tempted to spill beer on or bump into... and somewhere someone can't easily jack something w/o someone seeing when in a crowded room... and always be on the look out for deals...

I could tell ya more but, like I said sorry I'm late...

I don't think there are any, but in the price range and the speakers being looked at an amp would be over doing it. Pre-outs are nice feature for future-proofing but they are not needed.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the heads up. So if I did end up wanting to use an amp I'd have to go purchase a different receiver. This all can get very expensive very quick :D.

Edit: the 605 only has one preout and it's for the sub

That is common place with receivers that do not have pre-outs as many people get powered subs. If you are thinking you will want an amp in the time frame you will be using the receiver then it would be best to get a receiver with pre-outs.

The Marantz has pre-outs for every channel.;)

Looks as though the 605 doesn't.

Follow the link, and click on rear view. That looks like inputs in the center at the bottom.

Hats off to EVERYONE in this thread! Thank's for helping a newbie get started right. I'm 42 years old now, and got into this addiction when I was 17. The summer of 1982 I worked construction in the Florida sun to buy my first system. My father had no interest in audio, just golf.

My only resource were my precious collection of "Stereo Review" magazines. I went with cheapo Technics equipment, but bought my speakers locally. Boston Acoustics, then JBL's.

When I went into the Army things changed. Hi end gear was everywhere! All the respected names were for sale without the mark up or taxes! I bought my trusty JBL's for $660 a pair, where as at my hometown dealer they were over $1200 plus taxes. And bought top of the line NAD and Denon gear.

Anyways midna don't expect your first system to be your last. You've taken a bite from the fruit, and now your doomed :D.

Surround sound in a dorm room might be a little overkill. Go with a 2.1 until your in an big apartment or house.

If it were me, I'd get the best speakers I could afford, because even the best electronics can't help the sound of crappy speakers. Buy the best 2.1 reciever you can, and an Oppo to play DVD/CD/MP3 disc's. Later add a descent sub, and enjoy till you can start your next system.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!

midna stated a future need for this feature. I wouldn't purchase a receiver without it.;)

I would go with the Marantz. It retails for $569. I just wouldn't want a receiver I couldn't upgrade. I added an amp to mine within the first year.

This may be too much to wish for, but I would really love the ability to keep the receiver for a good 5 years at least and not have to worry about needing something new on it. I'm definately only going with a stereo system for now with hopes of adding a sub in the near future.

To sum up what I'm looking at right now:
receivers
The onkyo 605 for $300 (no preouts :() http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=178863&WT.mc_n=95&WT.mc_t=U&cm_ven=COMPARISON%20SHOPPING&cm_cat=SHOP%20LOCAL&cm_pla=DATAFEED-%3EPRODUCTS&cm_ite=1%20PRODUCT&cm_keycode=95
The Marantz SR4001 for $430 (preouts :)) http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/MARSR4001
speakers
MORDAUNT SHORT MS912 for $279
x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker - $219 a pair
DVD Player
Unknown but I do like
OPPO DV-981HD for $200 refurb'ed

At worst I may have to forgo the dvd player until I have more money, but I have a mvix MX-760HD that holds all my movies/tv anyways, and a computer that should give out decent video if not great audio. I italicized the choices I'm leaning towards now.

With the price range you are looking at for receivers I would check out what Yamaha has to offer. It will most likely be less than the Marantz and have pre-outs as well. I would look for a refurb to save some extra money too.
