I Just bought a Velodyne VA-1012XII from a guy on craigslist. Im not sure if it works or not. Im having a hard time finding that out. I only have 2 days to get my money back from the guy, so time is of the essence.

The problem is, I have a crappy HTIB phillips setup, I havent bought my new receiver yet. How on earth can I connect this sub to see if it even functions. not trying to get deep into it, right now I just want to know if it works at all.

Below is a link to a very similar subwoofer with almost exactly the same inputs on the back. Unforunately I cant find a photo or user manual for my phillips HTIB receiver, but it just has 5 speaker inputs, and a black RCA type input for the subwoofer. (i beleive its LFE)

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!:( I have 2 days to tell the guy i want my money back.

thanks in advance for your help! i will be eternally grateful.

bench43,

You have some options.

1. Do the HTIB speakers use bare wire connectors at the speakers? If so, then you can connect those speaker wires into the back of the sub in the left/right speaker-level jacks. That will send a signal to the sub and let you know if it is working at all. You'll either want to bypass the subs crossover (with the switch) or set it as high as it will go (the similar sub manual shows a dial going to 120 Hz).

2. If your HTIB has any sort of RCA output jacks (e.g. for a VCR), you could connect that RCA jack to one of the line-level RCA jacks on the back of the sub. That will also send a signal to the sub.

3. You can use a minijack-to-RCA splitter cable (can get at Radio Shack for cheap) and plug anything with a headphone jack into the line-level inputs on the sub - iPod, HTIB, whatever. You might need to turn up the volume on the component with the headphone jack, but that will also send a signal to the sub.

4. If you have components that have RCA output jacks, like a DVD player, VCR, or tape deck, you could connect those RCA outputs to the line-level RCA inputs on the sub.

Whatever you do, I highly suggest that you start with the volume level of the sub set to the minimum and work your way up.

adam,

thanks for the reply. before I posted, I took the speaker wire off of one of my front channels, and then hooked that up to the LEFT, IN red and black screw-down posts... nothing.

Im assuming any sub makes some sort of "bass-y click" that ive heard so many times on other subs. Maybe not, but Im pretty certain that it doesnt even power on. im not sure how to tell if its even powering up.

Ok,

so if this doesnt work, anybody want to jump in on what sub I should buy? I got this thing for $149.00

So, equal or better sub, for same or less money.

Power and size isnt as important to me as Tight accurate bass.

Does the green LED power light turn on? If not, make sure that the power cord is plugged into a live output and that the main power switch is on. Then, toggle the "Auto/On" switch to "On". If you don't get any power that way, then the thing just isn't working. If you get power that way, then try toggling the "Auto/On" switch to "Auto" and retry what you did before and look for the LED power light to turn green. It might be that the signal was to low to trigger the auto on feature, or the sub volume was too low to hear.

Just some thoughts.

Sorry to hear that it's not working. Maybe the guy will have some answers for you tomorrow. Maybe now you know why it was inexpensive. :D

I'd suggest checking out the threads in the "Subwoofer" section for recommendations. The question, "which sub should I get for $X" comes up fairly often.

A typical recommendation around here in that price range is the x-sub at av123.com (http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=12.1). It sells for $199 before shipping, but they appear to be out of stock until September.

:D Not stupid at all, my friend. You're definitely not the only one asking...hence, it comes up a lot. People here are always happy to throw in their recommendations, so never worry about asking!
