I quickly set up some new gear just to try out. The problem is the volume level when viewing Lucky # Slevin HD.I can crank the receiver up all the way and it is not loud at all. But when I switch to a regular DVD, same components, same settings, same everything, the volume can be set no where near as loud and be fine for listening. Is there something simple I am missing or????

What is your source for the Lucky # Slevin HD? If it's something with a variable audio output (TV, PC), then you might have the source volume turned way down. Your receiver will just amplify the input signal, and if that is a lot lower than a normal line-level input, then it will sound much quieter at any given volume setting on the receiver.

Well I just tried a HD demo disc and the volume was fine.It has got to be something with the Lucky # Slevin disc.

Source is a toshiba A2 ran into yamaha RX-V661 via hdmi.

Ahhh. It will be good if someone else with a HD-DVD player chimes in, because I'll be flying almost blind on this next comment because of my lack of knowledge of HD-DVD players and HDMI.

In my experience with regular DVD players and digital connections, the volume of the output can depend on which audio track I have selected. As one example, the 2-channel stereo track from my Cranberries "Under the Skin" DVD is much quieter than the 5.1 track. It was probably just mixed that way. Perhaps the Lucky # Slevin disc default audio track is not what you'd want? You might want to see if it has another one.

Well I think that may be the problem though thet didnt include any audio options on this DVD at all.

My experience is that most CDs and some DVDs have practically no dynamic range. You keep trying to get them sound "right" but no matter how much you turn up the volume up it does not help much if at all. The Eagles Concert DVD HFO is a great example of DVD that has great dynamic range. On the other side none of Billy Joel's CDs or DVDs have much dynamic range and I have them all because I am a fan of Bill Joel. Carol King In Concert is another example. I have both the CD and DVD version, no dynamic range on either. Little dynamic range really hurts the enjoyment of the music for me.

I'd suggest also checking the display on your receiver to see what audio mode it is in when you play that disc. Is it set up to automatically detect the audio stream?

I came across one review of that HD-DVD that said that the dialogue volume was slightly low, but nothing about it being overwhelmingly quiet.

The display says "straight" and displays a 5.1 setup even though I have it set for just the fronts. It does this for both the hd demo and other hd disc. When playing any other standard dvd it will display just the fronts as it should.

It seems a though it is just the Lucky # Slevin disc.

Is the symptom present on all HD-DVD's? If it is only the Lucky # Selvin disc, it might be the mix. Try some HD-DVD discs that are known to be reference quality for audio. If the problem persists, it might indicate a setup/ configuration issue.
But when I switch to a regular DVD, same components, same settings, same everything, the volume can be set no where near as loud and be fine for listening.
This is not a fair comparison since the technologies are different and the mix might be different also. Keep the format consistent when evaluating or troubleshooting. It will reduce the number of variables thereby making it easier to get to the root of the issue.

The only other HD DVD is the HD demo disc. The level is so low on Lucky # Slevin it is unwatchable.
