Newbie question - single SW RCA to bare wire?

Hey all. I'm a real newbie to A/V connections and I just got a Klipsch AW-800 outdoor Sub for around my pool. The back of the sub has typical connects for bare wire or bananna plugs but my Yamaha 5940 AVR has a single RCA type jack for the sub out. How do I connect that? Thanks!!

is the subwoofer active or passive? (does it have it's own amplifier?)

if not, you're gonna need to connect it to an amplfier instead of the RCA type jack of the AVR that doesn't supply power (only signal)

Chris, welcome to the forum!

That is a passive sub, so as Mike said, you can't connect it to the RCA subwoofer output on the Yamaha and get any sound. The description of that sub on the Klipsch website indicates that you could run the speaker wires for the main speakers (left/right) into that sub, and then run speaker wires out of the sub to your main speakers. The sub will handle all of the cross-overs (I'm guessing the owner's manual will help with setting those up).

Running the wires that way will power both the sub and the main speakers using the Yamaha. Alternatively, you could run the RCA subwoofer signal from the Yamaha into an external amplifier (like Mike said) and then run speaker wires from the amp to the sub.

Thanks guys . You just saved me hours of work and many $$$ as I was initially thinking I could just use bare speaker wire with an RCA on one end. (Hmmmm... why can't I hear anything??)

Chris, any time. Glad that we could help.

Just keep in mind that the RCA connections on the back of your receiver are for very low power signals. The speaker wire connections, on the other hand, carry much higher power signals.
