Receiver and pe amp help

Hi i have been reading through the forum and trying to decide on a new receiver in the $2-3000 range. I am being swayed by the denon it looks very appealing with the two hdmi outs and the pc interface. There is also a lot of noise about the onkyo. Any input on these? Also a lot of people mention that they are driving their speakers with a separate mac. I' m a little green here but how exactly does that work. I often feel my definitive mains are a little under powered. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would suggest waiting for the Onkyo TX-NR905, which is due this year. It is robust, feature laden, and has all kinds of audio/video processing power.

Hello Rick, I am glad you mentioned that.

Before the end of the year we will be seeing a new pre/pro from Emotiva with HDMI 1.3 switching and processing. Paired with the MPS-1 the new pre/pro would be a formidable bargain.

Another vote for Emotiva

I would also recommend Emotiva, I have their lower end LPA-1 HT amp.
The nice thing about seperates is you will always need a good amplifier. You can replace the pre-pro as new features and processing come out.

The latest linup of receives is more likely to include ipod docs, XM radio, networking, ect. if these types of features are important to you.

A pre/pro does all the processing and outputs the signals to an amplifier that does all the actual powering of the speakers while a receiver will do both. Many higher end receivers also have preouts as well that allow you to connect them to an amp.
