Looking to buy a new TV and the one definite is it can not be more than 39" wide.

While my panny crt hdtv still works great I have another thread going over in subwoofers on building a new cabinet to hold my gear. Since my panny is 200 lbs. compared to 50-60 lbs on new plasma or LCD, now would be the time to upgrade since that wieght difference would change how the cabinet is built.

I'm pretty sure I want a plasma but am open to suggestions. The room has a fair amount of light during the day but no direct sunlight into the room. Veiwing is probably 40% HD sports, 30% HD broadcast TV and 30% DVD movies.
Current sources as below are motorola hd cable and sony progressive scan DVD, will upgrade to oppo once I have new TV (no hdmi on panny) will wait for now on HD DVD, no video games.

As mentioned above the only thing I'm locked on is the width can't be more than 39". I have plenty of depth so rear projection could be an option but I don't think they even make them this small and not sure if I would want one anyways with what I hear about spinning color wheels, mirrors etc.

Mainly want to get the biggest and best picure I can without exceeding the 39" width, not loking to go cheap or find something to get me by.

The width of most widescreen TVs is slightly less than the diagonal measurement so you should be looking for 37-40" TVs. Some 42" may also fit - as long as they don't have speakers on the sides.

Crutchfield and other places have detailed measurements on the spec page of TVs they carry. I'd start there to narrow down the choices.

...and you know you can always bring a tape measure with you to the store. :)

Just bump the space to 40" If you do that you can have a wide range of 42" plasmas. I would say most are 39 3/4" or so as long as the speakers are on the bottom. Check Pioneer PDP-4270HD and the panasonic lines. I had a guy with the same problem. Its a space over a fire place. I just used a utility knife and took the lip of the molding off to make it fit.

w8n4afreak,
Are you talking about cutting the molding on the wall or on the TV???

My problem is looking at the TV, to left is a wall so no luck there and to the right is the opening/doorway to the kitchen. Anything wider than 39" will overhang into the walkway, and besides looking funny I'm afraid some one will run into the TV and knock it off.

I like both the brands you mention but have not found a 42" under 39" wide. I'm looking at 40" units now but there are not near as many choices in this size.

Costco has some 37" and I think 40" as well. The 37" without speakers on the side is almost 36", the size I need for my yet to be built built-ins;)
