Axiom Epicenter EP500 or SVS?

starting to piece together an HT setup with my dad and we're pretty set on the Axiom Epic 60 500 6.1 package

My question is, would we be better off swapping out the Axiom Epicenter EP500 included in the package for a SVS PB12 Plus (maybe a Plus/2)
The ep500 is about the same price as the Plus2, except the Plus2 dual subwoofer is essentially twice the sub.

my 2 cents......

Try the sub in the Axiom system first, you get 30 days :) But for the money they want for the EP 500 you could buy the top of the line Hsu Research VTF-3 HO with Turbocharger. I have one, and love it. It's got a seven year woofer warranty, and a 500 watt amp that peaks at 2000 watts. It will easily replicate thunder, depth charges, and it's musical too!

Good Luck!

Maybe we should take a step back and ask the OP what the room size is for this application, and how much music/movies we are talking about here...

I have a Plus/2 and love this hard hitting pounder... its thunderous.. and I feel it bodes quite well for music in my house, and I listen to a fair amount...

That being said, The Axoim EP 500 was on my list, as its supposed to be quite accurate, very well constructed, and pounds just fine... In my application (Huge Room 820 cu ft) Im not sure it would have put out enough bass for me.. I even added a second SVS Plus to the room. Nor did the EP500 pass my approval for finish quality with the square corners instead of rounded corners, and finishes available.... Im sure I would have been extremely impressed with the output.

Now I can appreciate Craigsubs reviews on subs, as he has dumped a ton of money to listen to many subs, that is just fine, but like speakers I think the happiness is in the ear of the beholder. 3pts difference even in his own words is basically the same.

If you have a small room, the Axiom will really perform... If you compare it to a single SVS sub like the Plus, I believe the Axiom will put the Plus to shame, but against the Plus/2 Im not sure the output will be as great for a larger room. Fit and Finish are extremely important to me. All 3 suggestions are with you on the Axiom/SVS PLUS2/HSU subs... Im not sure you can make a mistake here..

Just my opinion....

Warp you're dead on

I only provided that list because it helps people put things into perspective and if you read that thread it wasn't about winners or losers. It was about the overall performance in all aspects, including cost and the points where awarded on that merit system. Besides I didn't state it's twice the sub, then again, I probably read to much into what B_N was saying;). Afterall it does have an extra 12" woofer.:p

1. What's most important to you?
a. Loudness?
b. Tightness?
c. Finish?
d. Size?

2. How big is your room?

Each sub mentioned in this thread has its advantages and disadvantages.

unfortunately, before I can add to the axiom vs. svs thingy, I'm gonna have to wait for my own svs.

also consider, craigsub probably based his list on music listening, if you are leaning towards HT, I doubt you're gonna say this explosion sounded better on the other sub ...

I agree.... I at first I thought differently, as I was quite envious of his ability or should I say $$ to audition different subs so he must know what he's talking about if he's buying all this stuff and reporting about it...

But not so much anymore...

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the subs.... I personally want you to get the Axiom, so I can hear what you think... but the HSU and the SVS will be great subs for ya too....

I wouldn't buy into much that guy says.

I know he's usually unbiased but that IMO would be impossible:)!
However, I do find alot of his threads and post very informative:)!
Besides, I am still bitter because he didn't flat out choose the Vertias over the M80's in a comparison, awhile back.:p;):).

Cheers, Bill:)

True he is quite knowledgeble, but some of the posts I have read had gotten to be quite rediculus, and after a while it just turned into pointless childish bickering.

This hobby is based on alot of personal speculative opinion, one mans lump of coal, is another mans diamond in the rough...

Of all the subs listed here, people have suggested over personal opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that... Where most of us have tried a product, and found great success with it. All the subs suggested have been pitted against Big dollar subs and held their own or blew them away. They are a great bang for the buck... HSU, AXIOM, SVS, ED, AV123...
Get something that matches your room size, budget, and WAF factor if there is one, and you'll be happy...

Thats my story and Im sticking to it... ;)

I don't think you were around back in the day when he posted here. Needless to say, Ilkka trapped him in a corner regarding his findings, and how they didn't line up with his impressions. He then started boo hooing to mods trying to get people banned.

I'll find the threads and show you.

no offense, but i would merit craigsub's reviews 10 times as much as sheep's. at least...

sheep is an ~18 year old kid after all. and although he might know a lot for his age, he hasnt done close to as much sub testing as craigsub.

i mean the kid lives with his parents still. but again.. no offense. there is nothing wrong with that. its just that i dont really like how he seems to make himself out to be this experienced audio specialist.

to act like you have more knowledge than craigsub is basically ridiculous

please tell me you're sarcastic or something.

/sarcasm on: with this post of yours, I estimate you to be around the age of ... 12? /sarcasm off

judging people by their age.
judging people because they live with their parents.

low blows.

if there's really nothing wrong with his age and his living with his parents, why mention it in the first place?

Hm..

As I recall it wasn't Sheep who refuted those results, it was somebody named Ilkka. It was apparent to me, they both had issues with one another and we'll leave it at that. ;)
Oh and by the way! For someone to start a sentence with no offence then, that's precisely not the intent.

 Sheep, happy BD :D

korgoth is an audio alchemist after all. and although he might know a lot, he hasnt done close to as much helpful contributing as Sheep.

i mean the guy only shows up now and then. but again.. no offense. there is nothing wrong with that. its just that i dont really like how he seems to make himself out to be this relevant poster.

to act like you have more credibility than Sheep is basically ridiculous.

age is valid in the sense that there is no way he has been able to test as many subs as craigsub. i never said i had more cedibility, i just claimed that sheep has less credibility that craigsub. i like sheep i just think he tends to steer people in a direction when hes never even heard the speaker for himself. That is actually fine to do.. but when you discredit a person that really has listened to the speaker it doesnt seem right. especially for someone like craigsub who just generally wants to help.

when i said no offense i meant it, i didnt mean it in an attacking way, i meant it in a way that expressed my opinion. being 18 means you dont have the money to test out every sub on your own. But, I'll admit sheep probably knows a lot more than i do. H does spend a lot more time on here than i do

if all your knowledge comes from this site, youd absolutely love axiom, rbh, svs, hsu, and avs123. Dont you find it weird that no other forum concentrates on those companies as much as here. Also, dont you find it weird that those companies have advertisements on this forum? Axiom reviews from 2005 were still featured on the home page a few months ago. Im not saying they are bad companies, or that the reviews are false in any way, i just think they have a strategy.
