What Do New Receivers Really Have?

If your getting your head in a spin trying to keep up with and research all the info about new receivers, don't worry, your not alone.

This thread will hopefully collect a lot of snippets and explanations for new technologies.

So.. here goes.

The pioneer SC-LX90 will have scaling to 1080p/24fps.

Could be a bit pricy for most of us.

Also a bit of info about denon v onkyo chip processors.
bfdtv
The Onkyo 875 has Silicon Optix ReonVX processing, THX Ultra2 Certification, dual push-pull amps, and Burr-Brown's newest PCM1796 DACs (123dB SNR). The Denon 3808 uses the same three TI SHARC DSPs as the Onkyo for audio decoding and processing, but has inferior Faroudja FLI02310 video processing, inferior Burr-Brown PCM1791 DACs (113dB SNR) from 2005, and at least on paper, an inferior amp design.
Anyone heard what the hell Yamaha up too?

Post 'em if you got 'em...

That's a bit of a funny statement since Onkyo's All-Channels-Driven numbers have never come close to Denon's. And while the Reon does best the Faroudja, source components will have a much larger impact on the image than either of the scalers. And the 1791's are in every practical term equal to the 1796's (do you really think you or any human being on earth can hear the difference between a 113dB SNR chip and a 123dB one? Trust me, you can't... and if you ever did the result would be deafness).

It makes sense that the ACD of the Onkyo would be higher, because it has a much beefier build overall. The Onkyo TX-SR805 is the heaviest receiver I have seen for under $1000 new (its suggested retail is around $1200 and it is still a bargain at that price, it can be found for under $1000). It tips the scale a tad above 50 pounds.:D

You make an important point edmcanuck, that a quality source is better than scaling up a signal (I'm pretty sure thats what you were aiming for?). But I would be careful throwing around 'All channels driven' comments. You could get this thread shut down.;)

Is the SNR the ONLY difference between the PCM1796 and PCM1791?

What about the "inferior" amp design of Denon v Onkyo? Is there anything to qualify such a comment?

Thanks for the input, it all helps us lay-men.:)

Receiver video processing

Why spend so much dough on a receiver with good video processing when you can get an HD-DVD player for $300. And for that mater, a receiver with HDMI 1.1 will pick up the lossless audio track. An HD source will always look better than a scaler. There is only so much that a good scaler can do with low res SD feeds. Garbage in, garbage out.

You hit on exactly why many people who really understand what is going on aren't jumping on the bandwagon to get the TrueHD decoding receivers. Most all HD players decode these HD formats and can send the information without loss to the receiver. So who cares? Of course its cool to have the newest and greatest but with receivers that changes too quickly to worry.

I can't imagine regular tv happening in 1080p anytime in the near, if not distant future. Which makes it handy to have something up-scale a bland tv signal into something better. Obviously not as good as a native 1080p/24fps source, but a lot better than SD. I, for one will have to live with it since I don't have many full high def channels available. (Actually that figure is zero.)

On a different note what is the deal about Integra? Is it really any better than Onkyo? Apparently things like resistors, capacitors etc are "hand picked"? This hasn't been a one-off claim I've heard on the way home from the pub! A few people I know, including a distributor, have been talking up this 'reason to buy' an Integra.
Has any one heard this? Sounds incredibly dubious!!:(

What sucks about getting a receiver with TrueHD decoder is that you can't utilize it yet. Apparently none of the current players output a bitstream of the HD Audio formats yet.:(

Over the Air HD

Davo,
Don't know if it works in Australia, but I can pick up all of the local stations in HD (720p or 1080i) with an indoor antenna.

I don't expect 1080p to be a broadcast standard any time soon because it uses twice the bandwidth of 1080i. However, it is pretty easy for the display to deinterlace a 1080i signal. Some reviews including projector central noted that they could not detect a differece between 1080i and 1080p HD video players on the current generation of 1080p front projectors.

Ahh yes, only in America. Unfortunately while the size of our two countries are not too different, our population is approx 15 times smaller. And with that stat goes all the usual issues of cost-v-number of potential customers. *shrug*what can you do?

Did some one say Yamaha?:D

That is certainly a pretty receiver, especially the insides. I am becoming curious about the Integra as well. Seems as if they are being more tight lipped about their higher end models.
Infuriating, isn't it?

I don't know which receiver to drool over untill I have seen them all!

Exactly, and I need to inform my dad on which to buy and I don't want to say X and see that Y was the one I wanted to play with more! (I get to set up everything for him).
