The name of the 20% is Dogfish Head 120 Minute!!

I couldn't even finish 1/2 the bottle on Wendsday!! I had 1/4 Wendsday, 1/4 Yesterday and today I'm not sure yet I usually go out on Fridays!! It was so overpowering I dont know if I would even get it again!! Here is a pic of the label!!

Sam Adams has a beer that is I think 22% alcohol by volume.

Yeast traditionally will die off when the alcohol content is too high, but that is based on the strain of yeast used and how tough it is. I just brewed a batch of skull splitter clone that is clocking in just a tad over 10% alcohol by volume.

Beer is technically beer when it is fermented from grains and not distilled regardless of alcohol content.

I think it's 25% I cant even get that one in FL. I think it's $100 for 1 BOTTLE!! That's too much for something that you cant even drink in 1 sitting!!

That would be the Sam Adams Utopia

I flew back from Boston on a plane with a Sam Adams rep (Southwest) and he, without flinching, said something to the fact of "Oops, this one didn't make it through the air pressure changes. Guess I'll have to go find another in town."

Another thing to note about the Utopia is that it comes in a 750ml bottle and its not ment to be consumed like a regular beer. If you go somewhere they serve it they will give you 1.5-3.0 ounces in a sniffter to sip on. Besides its gross.

I could imagine it tastes gross. The 20% one is so bad as I said I could not even finish the whole thing!! I dont think I will get that one again!!

IPA's have a history of their own. It had a lot to do with getting beer in India to taste good and keep from the long journeys from Britian. They are definately an acquired taste and not all of them taste the same. The best are manageable but some are a real chore to drink and, like you said, tough to justify a second purchase. I guess it all depends on what you grew up drinking. I commend you for at least trying one. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

IPA's have alot of hops. Hops were used primarily as a preservative, the bittering is a side affect that alot of drinkers started to like. So IPA's were heavily hopped so they could make the trip to India.

If you're gonna try an IPA, I'd suggest any of these. Each one has it's own unique flavor.

In order of preference:
Stone Ruination IPA (my favorite by far)
Four Peaks Hop Knot IPA (local to Tempe, AZ)
Four Peaks Raj IPA (local to Tempe, AZ)
Stone IPA
Sierra Nevada IPA
Redhook IPA

What about the chocolaty undertones with hints of raspberries and the pancakey lows with a hints of syrup?
