HDMI-A versus HDMI-X

Hey,

I am new to the forum and fairly new to the world of home theater. I just bought a 42" Panasonic plasma and a decent Sony DVD with upconversion capability. My sales rep recommended that I go with HDMI-X cables to connect the DVD to the TV and to connect my HD cable box to my TV. When the cable guy set up the new box, he told me he just got HDMI-A cables at Sam's Club for $20. Well, I paid $119 for my HDMI-X cables. Is there a noticeable difference? Should I return the pricey ones and go with the cheaper ones? I also see HDMI cables on the Internet for like $4-$7 dollars. There has got to be a difference in these cables besides just price - right?

Thanks,
MK

I would say go return those expensive waste of money cables you got and go to monoprice.com or bluejeanscables.com and get a cheaper hdmi that works just as well.

The guy was smoking something, there is no such thing as HDMI-A and I've never heard of X either. DVI does have a variant called DVI-A (analog) vs DVI-D (Digital).

I bought a 4ft one from Blujeans for $30 and it works just fine. I highly recommend them.

Did a search and Audioquest sells HDMI-X with the X being the 'X Factor'; in other words, some proprietary scheme they use to eliminate RF interference and justify the high price.

Sounds like a bunch of marketing BS* to me. However, it is amazing how adding small words or even just letters can give the impression that one cable is better than another due to the ridiculously high prices. I bought from monoprice.com as well as partsexpress and as such could not be any happier. Oh, forgot to mention the cables did not cost me an arm and a leg either.

Its just like the extreme marketing campaign. The X makes it sound cooler and thus it is so people are willing to spend an extra 10 or 15 bucks on the item.
