And some people seem to over-estimate what is required.

I guess thats why quality subwoofer manufacturers waste all those hundreds of thousands of dollars on research and development, acoustic facilities, and PhD's in physics\acoustics every year.

Please outline what substantial measured performance gains that only commercial subwoofers offer.

You don't have to spend anywhere near that dollar amount on drivers. You can find superb drivers for much cheaper.

-Chris
Don't have to no.

That wasn't the point of my post either.

And 4 k is nothin in the realm of HT subs, I've seen more spent in one living room for bass.....

Either was My point was that bass system fabrication is the primary cost of subs. Its not so much the equipment, though you can go crazy(as in 2k for a driver with 4" excursion) You can go well over that too, look at the parthenon. In fact I have seen much much more for audiophile bass systems with giant integrated horn multiple driver systems....

Anyway that's off topic. My point was is that making a bass system isn't too diffocult usualy. Simple laws of sound and theil small are definate rules. Sure some companies do tons and tons of R & D but then to keep the cost in line with what they can sell the quality of equipment and enclosure materials goes down. I would say comercial subs do something much much better than DIY in general. They make them beautiful!

I for one would love the rosenut finish dual SVS but for the cha-ching... I dunno. I think I could do a dual 18" with a tighter driver for less cash and have much higher spl, even in the lows.

Somehow I don't think SVS, HSU or AV123 are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on research...time and effort yes, but that kind of cash? Ridiculous to even suggest; and guess what? The products from these companies are high quality and manage to be less expensive and outperform most subs you will find commercially. It doesn't sound like you really have a grasp on what it takes...

No. Research and Development of a good subwoofer design is the most expensive part. Instruments, acoustic chambers, extensive testing and retesting different combinations of materials, dimensions, drivers, filters\crossovers, passive radiators vs. porting, sealed designs, etc. Some manufacturers have years, if not decades of research and development in their components.

Like I said, most people don't appreciate what it takes to build a quality subwoofer.
West, I missed this.

I think you completely missed where I was going.

And truethfully, math can give us the "perfect design" for any given aplication.
Comercial designs are made to do things in this order, be light weight and small. Secondly to look good, or have some gimic, draw, atraction... I'm not discrediting this, it may work.. it's the truth though... then finaly sound reproduction.

Subs are best in Huge enclosures.... with the right tune. To be even more finicy about it... well, they can't even start taking room responce into account, you can if you DIY(99% i would say don't though)

The lowest notes on a pipe organ acheive this task by being the size they are.....

R and D only comes into play when you have to make shortcuts... when you want to make something small enough and light enough you can ship it out.

R and D is based in marketing.

Again, I am not trashing this, I am just saying you can get much better sound for many less dollars DIY. And with subs, you deal with a much much much more narrow Hz range than a loudspeaker.. and the design for "perfect" reproduction is much harder to deal with.

Well its funny that I just re-read this entire thread, and the statement I made just over a month ago, started me to already buy my drivers...

And the price into this adventure will fall far short of what It would cost me to buy dual SVS PB Ultra13's... in fact... both drivers completed will cost me less then one Ultra.... Layed out like this...

2 - TC-2000's $550.00 (before the price change)
2 - Behringer EP2500's $600.00
Sonotubes and other materials $100-$150.00

So I figure about $1250 for Dual TC-2K Sonotubes...

Plenty of people have already built & layed out the design for me... comparatively will blow the SVS's I have out of the water...

So the DIY route can be far cheaper, but maybe not as pretty... I will shoot for a box design in the future, but that will require alot of planning and work on my part for a beautiful and elegant looking design....

I didn't know you went sonotube! Sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

OK the question is I want to know what is the fan on that behringer like and how does it juice the subs????

I'm verry torn so many people say their Amps are junk and loud cooling etc.

I believ the fan can be swapped out for a near silent type for about $8-$12. It may not be a problem for most as it requires a lot of load to get the fan to kick in (enough to where it is audible).
