ps3 to denon 2307

I chose PCM over HDMI ...

the 2307 receiver flags it as multi channel in, and I can't select any surround processing going to 7.1, right now it's only 5.1

is that my denon's limitation? or am I supposed to do something else?

I have the similar situation. I allow my ps3 to send PCM to my denon and during blu-ray movies I turn on dolby to get 7 channel since they are only encoded in 5. For games that are actually encoded in 7 channel (which seems to be all ps3 games) I have not had a problem getting 7 channels to play it seems that my receiver gets the proper signals.

Does it show as a multichannel with your back surrounds connected on the front display? (i.e. the little pictures that say FL FR etc...)

Thats odd, what game are you using? I can't remember but maybe there is an option on the ps3 to set it to 7 channel pcm? I will have more time to look tomorrow morning and I will get back to you. For now I would recommend cruising the ps3 audio settings and see if there is anything that stands out.

In bordum I checked the playstation support area and you should check under settings > audio to make sure you have it set to output LPCM 7 channel. The problem probably lies in the fact that default settings are probably set to 5 channel not 7. Check it out and let me know how it goes. (Good thing I placated my girlfriend with mario on the wii since we are on a date ).

oops, forgot to mention, this is for BD movies and not games, I don't have a single game yet.

I want to be able to use DTS:Neo/Dolby:Equivalent on the incoming 5.1 PCM

On BR movies you will need to set your receiver to multi channel/dolby (both) it should allow you. Thats how I have mine set since BR are only done in 5 channel I have yet to play with DTS but haven't seen a movie mastered in it. So far everything has been Dolby TrueHD.

I was too tired last night, didn't even have a sub connected yet. it's funny watching movies with lots of gunfire ... ptf ptft pttt pttt ptf ... all the speakers are still set to small.

I have a small inkling of a thought that you are not going to be able to use dts neo or dolby pro logic with the pcm signal. If I recall correctly, when using multi channel analog inputs on my receiver I am not able to apply any kind of dsp or soundfield adjustments to the signal.

On games and such I am not able to apply any sort of adjustment but when watching blu-rays the ps3 will only output a 5.1 signal no matter what, since that is what they are encoded in, at that point I am able to adjust the settings so it reads multichannel/PLII and uses Dolby matrixing to send information the surrounds backs. The reason you are not able to do this with the actual games is because they are encoded in full 7 channel sound and there is no need for matrixing.

You won't need to mess with receiver settings much, just make sure your ps3 is outputting 7 channel LPCM and when you have the movie running hit your Dolby cinema button that should be all. Took some playing for me to figure out but I got it .

found the problem

since this receiver came from my bedroom, it was set with NO surround back speakers. teehee.

anyway, I have a new problem. I have calibrated all the channels with an SPL meter. Switching from the PS3 to the DVD player, I notice that the center channel is out of whack. I check the settings and indeed all the channel levels are f&*((d. I set them again and then put on the lock settings. after watching a DVD, I switch to the PS3 ... and it's all messed up again.

any ideas what's wrong?

I have noticed my ps3 is louder than my dvd player. Is it just your center channel that changes when you switch from dvd to ps3? Also, if you switch back to the dvd player does the center channel go back to normal?

games in general are tons louder. On almost everysystem I think.

I bet it's compression. I don't know though.

I have the same issue with xbox running analog or digital... movies are much softer, but then the bass hits and it's thunder. Just my guess.

I think he was talking about a separate dvd player and the ps3. If the center channel is the only one significantly louder it doesn't seem like that the fact that it is the ps3 is to blame. All speakers should be louder or none.

yup, it's two different players.

Then it is the fact that it is the ps3. Check page 48 of your owners manual (the online one atleast) and you can use it to change the loudness of specific sources connected. On your OSD it is under Audio Input Set up > Input Function level.

That should solve the problem .

i saw that menu on the denon, if you are talking about the denon input function level, do I up the DVD level or down the PS3 level?

but that still doesn't solve my real problem. I'm planning to just use optical ins for the DVD player ... maybe that will help lose the confusion from the receiver.

I would probably drop the ps3 levels since the system seems rather loud. What are you currently using for the dvd player right now to carry audio/video?

Also, why do you not think that solves the real problem? If the ps3 is playing louder this option will tone it down to the level of your other components wasn't that the problem?

my real problem is the changing of the channel levels by themselves.

I currently use HDMI for audio and video on the DVD player. (I wished I could do the 1 cable solution)
